The undergraduate training program in Cinema and Popular Arts of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) has been officially approved by the National University and will enroll students in 2024.
To help students and parents better understand this new and interesting field of study, USSH Media had a conversation with Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong (Vice Principal) and teachers working and teaching at the Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities - the unit that developed the project to open the field and directly trains this field of study.
Could you please share in general why the Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities has the idea of building this interesting and new training program?
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong: The University of Social Sciences and Humanities has experience and inherited the results from the Project on training certificates in Screenwriting and Film Criticism Theory (Ford Foundation, 2005-2012). The implementation of the project to build a bachelor's degree in Cinema and Popular Arts is also based on very careful research and practical surveys on the movement trends of contemporary Vietnamese cultural and artistic life, closely following the orientation of the Party and State on building a cultural industry as well as the current demand for human resources in the field of cinema and popular arts.
The construction of a new major was conceived and carefully prepared by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, going through a very strict appraisal and acceptance process. Since 2020, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has included this new major in the Plan for majors and majors for the period 2021 - 2025 and has been approved by the Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Immediately after that, the Faculty of Literature, as the professional focal point, has actively built the training program framework; edited and completed it based on receiving comments from leading experts in the fields of cinema, art, literature, education, ... at home and abroad.
Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Ngoc Thanh, former Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Cinema, highly appreciated the feasibility of the Cinema and Popular Arts training program of VNU-USSH.

In the process of building and perfecting the Cinema and Popular Arts program, the Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities regularly organizes seminars to listen to comments from experts.
The new and different point of the Bachelor of Cinema and Popular Arts at VNU-USSH is to aim at training high-quality human resources capable of researching, grasping, and shaping national cinema and popular arts, promoting major cinema/popular art trends in the world into Vietnam and introducing Vietnamese cinema/art abroad, at the same time, being able to directly participate in the life and movement of contemporary popular culture, grasping the forms of
public and the laws of motion of artistic taste, integrated into the global context
cultural globalization. At the same time, during the learning process, learners will also be equipped with knowledge, practice professional skills and necessary supporting skills directly related to careers in the field of cinema: director, screenwriter, producer, archiver, etc. to meet the increasing demands of the modern labor market.

What core knowledge blocks does the training program of the industry focus on equipping students with?
Dr. Nguyen Thi Nam Hoang (Deputy Head of the Faculty of Literature) said: Based on references from advanced training programs in the world (typically the College of Media at the University of Illinois Urbana - Champgain, USA) and domestic training practices, while closely following the needs and demands of human resources for the field of cinema and arts in Vietnam, the content of the bachelor's training program in Cinema and Popular Arts of VNU-USSH includes general knowledge, knowledge by field, knowledge by industry, by industry group and industry.
In which, the knowledge block by industry group and the industry knowledge block will include subjects that provide knowledge directly related to the field of cinema and contemporary popular art such as: Popular art in the digital age; Overview of cinema and television genres; Overview of world cinema history; Popular culture of countries around the world; Narrative, virtual reality and digital technology; Popular music; Contemporary visual arts; Contemporary theater and performance arts; Cinema drama in creating multimedia works; Vietnamese cinema and world cinema; Film curator and art curator; Film screenwriter; Film director, film editor, cameraman, about Sitcom, TV series and reality TV; Research and criticism of cinema; Art communication; Management of film projects and film funds; Organization of film production and storage;...
In addition to the required courses, students can choose very interesting courses according to their interests, strengths and career orientation.
Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Cam Giang (lecturer of the Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities) shared more: Different from the traditional training model of specialized schools that have been operating for many years in Vietnam with specialized vocational fields such as directing, filming, acting, etc., the Bachelor of Cinema and Popular Arts program aims to train workers with a foundation of writing skills, with a wealth of humanities and interdisciplinary knowledge to participate in the field of cinema and popular arts in positions such as screenwriter, curator, critic, researcher, theorist, digital content creator, cinema and popular arts project manager, archiving and exploiting cinema and popular arts heritage. It can be said that the program does not repeat existing training programs but opens a new direction in training, supplementing human resources for the gap in the labor market created by the development of cinema associated with popular arts. It is also a practical way to contribute to the training of human resources for the cultural industry that the Party and State are promoting.
Currently, the general trend of training majors at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is to increase practicality. So how is that trend reflected in the training program of this new major, Dr. Nguyen Thi Nam Hoang?
A highlight of the training program of the Cinema and Popular Arts major of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is that, in addition to providing students with systematic and in-depth knowledge of the history, development process, characteristics, and major cinema/popular art movements in the world and Vietnam, we especially focus on the goal of training students in professional skills and necessary supplementary skills directly related to cinema and art.
During the study at the School, in addition to theoretical subjects, students will study highly practical subjects such as: Film editing; theory and practice; Script adaptation in cinema art; Practice of film and television scriptwriting; Management of film projects and film funds; Organization of film production, distribution and storage.
