On March 11, 2022, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities organized a workshop entitled: “International Publications by Young Faculty and Postgraduate Students in the Social Sciences and Humanities: Current Situation and Solutions,” chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Thanh Truong (Vice Rector) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong (Vice Rector). This conference was an important preparatory step for the project to organize an international scientific conference on international publications by postgraduate students and young faculty members, scheduled to take place in July 2022.

In addition to the Board of Directors and heads of departments and faculties within the University, the Workshop was also honored to welcome Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Thu (Director of the Center for Asian Studies Support - ARC).

In his opening remarks at the workshop, Professor Hoang Anh Tuan (Rector of the University) emphasized that there is currently a great need for international publications among young faculty members and doctoral candidates of the university. This initiative aims to support doctoral candidates in completing their applications for defense, standardize academic titles and degrees for young faculty members, and promote scientific research and international publications.

Associate Professor Dr. Dao Thanh Truong introduced the main contents of the Workshop: The workshop took place in two sessions: morning and afternoon on March 11, 2022, to listen to the exchange of opinions from functional departments and faculties on the current state of publication by young staff and doctoral candidates in each unit; as well as opinions from the young staff and doctoral candidates themselves on their needs and difficulties in publishing research papers in internationally recognized journals. Based on that, the Workshop proposed several breakthrough solutions to create conditions to support the international publication activities of young staff and doctoral candidates more effectively. Because in reality, international publication has become a mandatory requirement for doctoral candidates as well as staff in faculties.

In the consultations with functional departments (Training, Scientific Research Management, and Personnel), the urgency of this workshop was emphasized, highlighting the current situation regarding the quantity and quality of international publications by young staff and doctoral candidates, and proposing several solutions. According to information from the Training Department representative, nearly 200 doctoral candidates urgently need to have articles published to complete their defense dossiers; some doctoral candidates have publications, but mainly group publications and are not yet included in the list of highly reputable scientific journals, especially those listed in the training regulations of Hanoi National University. Some solutions proposed at the workshop include: strengthening connections with foreign universities and publishers for academic exchange and publication support; and increasing the sharing of information about international scientific conferences organized by faculties within the university so that doctoral candidates from other faculties can participate. Enhancing the accountability of supervising teachers and strengthening research groups,...

Representatives from various departments also shared that not only doctoral candidates and young staff members, but also many faculty members within the departments need publications to standardize their academic ranks and degrees. Based on the publication situation in their respective units, the departments shared many experiences and solutions, such as: the need to strengthen support from functional departments, and to enhance the role of supervisors and postgraduate program managers in the departments, from identifying research problems to conducting a publication that meets international standards. At the same time, representatives from the departments expressed their determination to support doctoral candidates and young staff members in preparing for the international conference to be held in July 2022, as well as in future academic activities.

The workshop also heard sharing from doctoral candidates and young staff members: all opinions highly appreciated the significance of the workshop, considering it a great opportunity for doctoral candidates to both complete their defense dossiers and participate in scientific research and international publications in the future. In addition, some opinions raised concerns and difficulties in the process of international publication, and contributed suggestions for organizing the international workshop in July 2022 successfully. At the workshop, representatives from the Science Management Department acknowledged the exchange of opinions and answered some of the concerns of the doctoral candidates and young staff members.

Concluding the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Thanh Truong acknowledged the support, sharing, and determination of all departments and faculties in the university in assisting and encouraging young staff and doctoral candidates to participate fully and effectively in the workshop to be held in July 2022, and subsequently in the publication work after the workshop. Based on the consultations at today's workshop, the Science Management Department will incorporate the feedback to finalize the proposal for organizing the first International Scientific Conference for Postgraduate Students and Young Staff of the University of Science and Humanities as soon as possible and inform the faculties and departments. The solutions presented at today's workshop not only address the need to complete the defense dossiers of nearly 200 doctoral candidates but also contribute to strengthening the international publication of lecturers and students of the university this year and in the years to come.
