The workshop aims to clarify the role, potential, dynamics, and development trends of the port system; and Vietnam's economic and diplomatic activities in history and the present. The workshop seeks to gain new, deeper, and more comprehensive understanding of the ports in the North Central region, conducting in-depth research on the potential and strengths of each port, the social and cultural life, and the role and position of the North Central port system within the regional and inter-regional context.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Thanh Truong (Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities) delivered the opening remarks at the conference.
The specific topics discussed at the workshop included: the formation and development of the North Central coastal port system throughout history; concepts and theories of maritime economy; activities and routes of regional and international economic and trade exchanges; the position of the sea - ocean and the North Central coastal region in the development of the Dai Viet - Dai Nam - Vietnam nations; natural potential, natural resources and the role, activities and relationships of the North Central coastal ports; and the cultural and social characteristics of the North Central coastal region.Based on the analysis of the above issues, the Workshop put forward proposals and recommendations on the role of marine and island research in the successful implementation of Vietnam's Marine Strategy, while also providing some solutions for preserving and promoting the value of marine cultural heritage.

Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim (Director of the Center for Seas and Islands, Head of the Department of Global History, Faculty of History, University of Social Sciences and Humanities) presented a paper entitled "Some thoughts on the role and typical characteristics of the sea space of North Central Vietnam".
Following the opening ceremony, the workshop proceeded with two sessions:Plenary Session: The North Central Vietnam Port System: Background, Potential, and Position
Session 2 with 2 subcommittees: North Central Vietnam Port System: Economic activities and regional and inter-regional economic exchange; North Central Vietnam Port System: Cultural issues and cultural exchange.

Through specialized and interdisciplinary approaches, nearly 30 presentations at the conference explored numerous new sources of information, including archaeological, cultural, and anthropological data, to further clarify Vietnam's maritime traditions and the extensive regional and interregional connections between the trading ports and economic centers of North Central Vietnam and markets, supply sources, and raw material regions from the Central Delta, the Truong Son - Central Highlands, and Southeast Asian, Asian, and global countries.
| Over the years, research on the North Central region of Vietnam and its diplomatic and trade activities has yielded many important results. Numerous articles, research papers, theses, and dissertations on the Lach Truong and Lach Bang trading port areas (Thanh Hoa); the Hoi Thong, Ky Ninh, and Ky Anh ports (Ha Tinh), Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue... have been published domestically and internationally. In 2016, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, in collaboration with the Vietnam Historical Science Association, organized a scientific conference: “The Sea and the Land - The Role and Network of Interaction in the River Basins of Central Vietnam”. In 2017, the International Conference: “The Central Vietnam Port System and the “Maritime Silk Road” - Roles and Relationships” was jointly organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi and the People's Committee of Hoi An City. |
