On September 30th, in Hanoi, the 8th National Congress of the Vietnam Historical Science Association, for the term 2026-2031, held its solemn session. The Congress was attended by Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thang – Member of the Politburo of the 13th Party Congress, former Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Political Academy, former Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council; and Mr. Pham Tat Thang – Member of the Central Committee of the Party, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front and Central Mass Organizations, along with numerous delegates representing the historical community nationwide.
The Congress adopted a Resolution for the 2026-2031 term, outlining the direction for further organizational improvement, innovation in content and methods of operation, enhancement of research, consultation and social critique, and promotion of the application of digital technology in research and dissemination of historical knowledge.
One of the emphasized tasks is to strengthen research and clarify historical evidence contributing to the protection of national sovereignty and territory. The Association continues to participate in providing scientific arguments for the development and improvement of policies, while promoting research, preservation, and promotion of the value of relics, heritage sites, prominent figures, and traditional cultural values.
The resolution also requires the Vietnam Historical Science Association and its member associations to strengthen the dissemination of historical knowledge to the public, especially the younger generation. Coordination with the education sector to improve the quality of history education and traditional education is identified as an important content in the new term.
Digital transformation is considered a noteworthy direction. The Association will gradually build a digital data system on Vietnamese history, serving research, dissemination, and preservation of documents. At the same time, the Association will strengthen international cooperation, exchanging documents and research experiences with historians in other countries.
Regarding organization, the Congress determined to continue streamlining the apparatus, standardizing job positions, improving the capacity of the Association's staff, and expanding the organizational network in localities with needs. The Association also aims to strengthen and rejuvenate the Executive Committee, especially in key leadership positions.

The Congress elected the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Historical Science Association for the eighth term, consisting of 58 members, and the Standing Committee, consisting of 15 members.

The four Vice Presidents include Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Nhue, Vice President of the full-time association; Dr. Le Mau Nhiem, Vice President of the full-time association; Dr. Phan Tien Dung, Vice President of the part-time association; and Prof. Dr. Vo Van Sen, Vice President of the part-time association.
The restructuring of the new Executive Committee is identified as a crucial step for the Association to implement the goals of the 2026-2031 term, with a focus on innovating activities, promoting the role of gathering a team of historians, and bringing historical knowledge closer to social life.
Currently, the Vietnam Historical Science Association has a network of 40 member associations and branches with nearly 7,000 members, operating in research institutes, universities, agencies, and localities nationwide. During the past term, the Association participated in numerous research projects, compiling historical records, and studying national sovereignty, territory, the Southern region, prominent figures, heritage, and local history.
The 8th Congress marks the beginning of a new term as the Association enters its 60th year since its founding, highlighting the need to continue promoting the role of historians in researching, preserving, and disseminating historical knowledge, and contributing scientific arguments to contemporary issues.
