Continuing the tradition of the former Hanoi National University, the female staff of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is increasingly developing, making great contributions to all aspects of the University's activities. The proportion of female staff holding leadership positions is also increasing. In addition, the University also has many policies to support female staff in life, while creating an open environment for them to develop their abilities. Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Xuan Khang - Head of the Department of Organization and Personnel, Chairman of the University's Trade Union - discussed with reporters about this issue.
- Sir, what role does female staff work play in the school's policies and activities? The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is one of the universities with a large number of female staff (over 54%) and this ratio tends to increase rapidly. Due to many different reasons, the recruitment of staff at the University in recent years has only accounted for about 15% of men. If this trend continues, in the near future, most of the work of the University, especially teaching, research, management, etc., will be undertaken by women. Therefore, the Party Committees and authorities of the University have identified the work of female staff as one of the particularly important tasks. Doing this work well will make an important contribution to the cause of building and developing the University, meeting the requirements of the new development period.
- It is known that female staff accounts for 40% of the total number of management positions. What does this number say, sir?In recent years, it can be seen that the number of female cadres holding management positions at all levels has been increasing. Among the 150 leaders and managers of the whole school, there are 60 female cadres, including 07 Deans, 01 Head of Department, 01 Director of Center, 01 Museum Director, 01 Company Director and 09 Vice Deans of Faculty, 04 Vice Heads of Department are female. In addition, female cadres and civil servants are also very active in participating in union work: with 03/17 Party Committee members, 08/19 Party cell secretaries, 08/15 members of the School Union Executive Committee, 13/19 Chairmen of Department Unions are female. Notably, in the 2011-2012 school year, the school had its first female Vice Principal, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa. This is a fairly high rate compared to many other universities, showing that the female staff is playing an increasingly important role in all aspects of the school's activities. In fact, they have completed their tasks very well, not only demonstrating the qualities of a leader and manager, but also sometimes solving problems skillfully, thoroughly and creating a higher consensus in the group than many other male colleagues. This also shows that the school has effectively implemented many correct policies and guidelines in building and nurturing a team of female staff with capacity and dedication to the development of the school. All of this is to create a favorable and open working environment for them to develop their abilities.
- How have female staff contributed to the development of the School, sir?Female cadres have many advantages when participating in professional and management work. For example: they are often patient and meticulous - all of which are suitable qualities for research; they understand psychology and communicate more easily with students than men, so they are very suitable for teaching and imparting knowledge. In management, with their ingenuity and sophistication, they even solve many problems that male leaders have headaches with. Many female cadres have the determination to complete their training to meet academic standards at many advanced universities abroad and return to contribute to the School. The number of female cadres with academic titles and degrees is increasing. Currently, out of 262 female cadres, there is 01 Professor, 21 Associate Professors, 65 Doctors, 125 Masters. Female cadres in the school are implementing 2/6 State-level scientific topics; 10/20 VNU-Hanoi-level topics; 7/14 grassroots-level topics. And in particular, the female staff has been continuing the good tradition of the female staff from the time of Hanoi University of Science to the present. Generations of female staff of the School of Humanities have been proud of the famous female teachers and scientists from the time of Hanoi University of Science, such as the "Four Gentlemen" (04 female lecturers of the Faculty of Literature) including People's Teacher Le Hong Sam, Associate Professor Dang Thi Hanh, who are experts in French literature, in which Associate Professor Dang Thi Hanh has just been honored to receive the Academic Palm Medal of the French Republic. People's Teacher Hoang Thi Chau received the State Prize for Science and Technology and Professor NV Stankevich - a famous expert in Linguistics. Currently, the female staff of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities also includes leading experts such as Prof. Dr. Le Thi Quy - an expert in Gender Research and activities to prevent violence against women, who is in charge of the State-level project on "Research on theoretical and practical foundations for building Vietnamese families by 2020"; Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Minh Duc - an expert in Counseling Psychology. Or there are female cadres who are both experts in the industry and leaders for many years such as Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Quy (Head of the Faculty of Information - Library for 2 terms), Associate Professor, Dr. Lam Thi My Dung - an expert in Archaeology and Director of the Museum of Anthropology, Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Thi Phung (Head of the Faculty of Archival Science and Office Administration), Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Hoa (Head of the Faculty of Sociology), Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Khanh Ha (Head of the Faculty of Psychology)... Besides, there are many young female cadres with qualifications and capacity who are holding important responsibilities in faculties such as Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong - Head of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication. Every year, among the typical young faces honored at the School and VNU level, there are many female cadres who are excellent in their positions. It can be said that the female cadres of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities have matured in all areas of work and are increasingly asserting their position. The female staff of the University not only fulfill their duties as women in the family: loving their husbands, caring for their children, raising healthy children, educating good children, building happy families, but also become increasingly confident in their positions, achieving many achievements in teaching and scientific research. They are the pride of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
- But female staff also face many disadvantages compared to men. What policies does the school have to support female staff in work and study? The school always pays attention to implementing policies to build a team of female cadres to ensure quantity and quality. Party committees at all levels have innovated the work of planning female cadres, linking planning with training and fostering plans. After being included in the planning, units have sent female cadres for training and fostering to improve their professional qualifications and skills. Every year, units conduct reviews and assessments of the current status of the team in terms of age, professional qualifications, working capacity, health, training and fostering needs, reassess the arrangement and use of the existing female cadres, thereby concretizing the plan for training and fostering female cadres. In addition to planning, training and fostering female cadres, the Party Committee always pays attention to and promotes the development of female party members, paying attention to specific standards to encourage female cadres to join the Party. Therefore, the number of female party members is increasingly high. The female party members admitted in recent times have always been exemplary in their work and have fulfilled their assigned tasks well. On the part of the School, we have implemented many solutions to promote the work of female cadres among all cadres and civil servants such as: thoroughly grasping the Party's Resolutions on female cadre work; developing action programs and disseminating them to Party cells, Trade Unions, Youth Unions, etc. to fundamentally change the awareness and viewpoints on female cadre work among leaders at all levels, among cadres and party members, thereby overcoming the ideology of male superiority and female inferiority as well as narrow prejudices against female cadres, creating conditions for female cadres to fully develop their capacity and intelligence. The Party Committee and the Board of Directors have always paid attention to the implementation of policies and regimes for female cadres, ensuring the rights and legitimate interests of female workers. Immediately after the dispatch of the Minister of Education and Training in 1999, the School established a Committee for the Advancement of Women, headed by the School Principal. Through various forms and measures, thanks to the active activities of the Committee for the Advancement of Women, the Women's Union Committee has encouraged and motivated women to actively respond to emulation movements as well as social and cultural activities. In addition, the School also creates conditions for female staff to participate in scientific research activities, organizes tours and vacations for women on the occasion of major holidays such as International Women's Day (March 8) and Vietnamese Women's Day (October 20).
- On International Women's Day, do you have anything to share with the female staff of the School? In addition to the achievements, the work of female cadres at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities also has some shortcomings and limitations. The work of training and fostering the next generation of female cadres in some units has not really been invested in depth. A number of female cadres still have a mindset of being content with their lot, have not overcome family obstacles, and have not really advanced in their studies to improve their qualifications. The University is also continuing to research to propose preferential policies for female cadres in a more systematic way. However, to build and develop the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to meet the requirements of the new development period and further promote the tradition of the University requires all cadres and civil servants in general and female cadres and civil servants in particular to highly promote their strength, intelligence, and creativity. Each female cadre needs to proactively overcome difficulties, strive to improve their qualities and professional qualifications, assert themselves in their work, harmoniously combine family work and social work, contributing to building and affirming the position of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - a prestigious university, a leading trusted address for training and scientific research in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities in the country.
Thank you very much, teacher!
