On July 6-7, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU - USSH) held the 2nd Graduation and Bachelor's Degree Awarding Ceremony in 2024 for nearly 1,300 new graduates. Among them, there were 27 Valedictorians from the school's training majors. With a GPA of 3.82, Nguyen Thi Thuy Hien has excellently become the Valedictorian of the Journalism major, Institute of Journalism and Communication. Let's listen to Thuy Hien's sharing about her learning journey and the secret to her success!

PV: Hello Thuy Hien, thank you very much for taking the time to talk with us today. First of all, congratulations on becoming the valedictorian of the Journalism major at the Institute of Journalism and Communication. After 4 years of hard work, you must have some very special study secrets. Can you share them with us?
Thuy Hien: With the motto "diligence makes up for intelligence" of our grandparents, I have created scientific and suitable study plans and schedules for myself. I attend school regularly, absorb all the knowledge that the lecturers impart and always ask critical questions to understand more deeply. In addition to class time, I review knowledge, do exercises and prepare for the next lessons. I do not distinguish between main and secondary subjects, but all subjects need to be learned firmly and learned correctly according to different exam formats. For example, with multiple choice exams, I will stick to the keywords of each lesson to choose accurately. With essay and essay writing exams, in addition to the knowledge in lectures, textbooks, reference books, and monographs, I often look for more data and evidence related to practice to apply to the exam process to achieve the best results.
In particular, group study methods are very important and useful for university students. Therefore, I often boldly share, promote strengths, overcome weaknesses, and am willing to learn and combine the strengths of members so that the whole group can achieve high results.

PV: In addition to class time, does Thuy Hien often participate in extracurricular activities such as scientific research, general Youth Union activities, volunteer work and cultural movements inside and outside school?
Thuy Hien: As a Party member, I am very interested and actively participate in extracurricular activities. I participated in scientific research under the guidance of Mr. Phan Van Kien and won an encouragement prize. I also participated in most of the activities of the class, the Youth Union - Association and was a member of the 20-year-old Flame Club. In 2021 - 2022, I achieved the title of Outstanding Young Face at the grassroots level. In addition, I also participated in activities at the dormitory (representative committee, communications committee, and security committee) and locally (summer activities, Youth Union - Party activities in my hometown of Quang Nam).
During the 4 years of study, I was honored to be evaluated as a Party member "Excellently completing tasks" in 2021, 2022, 2023.

PV: Studying is a process that requires a lot of effort and time from students. With a limited amount of time, how does Thuy Hien balance between studying, extracurricular activities, part-time work and family?
Thuy Hien: Since my second year, I have started approaching the labor market by working as a collaborator for the Vietnam Law Newspaper, the Journalist and Public Opinion Newspaper or as a Copywriter (creating advertising and marketing content, etc.), so the story of balancing study time - extracurricular activities - part-time work is also a difficult problem, requiring me to set up a study and part-time work plan scientifically. To do this, I prioritize arranging a reasonable study schedule based on a solid understanding of the training process of the industry (Registering for a reasonable number of credits, choosing subjects that match my ability).
For union activities, I am not too "greedy" to join many clubs, but choose 1-2 clubs that I like the most to both contribute to the union work, practice my skills, and not affect my studies.
As for part-time work, I usually arrange it during my free time or after school hours. In addition, after dinner or while walking, I take the time to call my family and lover. Although I have less time to sleep and play, I still occasionally spend time on weekends for a “relaxed youth”, looking for famous places in the capital to visit and explore…

PV: What advice do you have for the next batch of students and the new students of the QH-2024-X batch who are about to enroll?
Thuy Hien: If I had to give advice to the next generation of students, I think they should study hard, get a foreign language certificate early, actively participate in extracurricular activities to improve their knowledge, communication skills, behavioral skills or social criticism, and spend time working part-time to gain experience. Of course, to do this, you need to create a scientific schedule to balance between studying, social activities, part-time work and personal life.
PV:After graduation, what are your plans and goals for the future?
Thuy Hien: No matter what people say, I still love and follow newspapers. And my future plan is still to work as a journalist. More specifically, in terms of short-term goals, I will continue to work as a contributor for Quang Nam Newspaper (a press agency that has helped me learn a lot about journalism), or another editorial office in Hanoi. At the same time, I will improve my foreign language skills, focusing on communication skills (English, Chinese) to serve the requirements of my work and study.
In particular, I was directly admitted to the Master of Journalism program at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU, so my long-term goal and plan is to complete this program.
Thank you Thuy Hien for your valuable sharing. I wish you success on your chosen path! The school always welcomes you to continue conquering higher levels of education.
