Topic:Investigation approaches and techniques: Data construction process in a doctoral thesis on social networks in rural areas of the Northern Delta, Vietnam.

Time: 9:00 AM Friday, November 28, 2008

Location: Multimedia Room, Museum of Anthropology, 3rd Floor, Building D, 336 Nguyen Trai, Thanh Xuan, Hanoi.

Presenter:Emmanuel PANNIER- Master, Research Fellow IRSEA (Research Institute on South-East Asia)/ Université de Provence, Aix-Marseille, France.

Summary: The author hopes that this presentation will be a discussion with you about the principles and research methods of anthropology and the social sciences. Through the case of a doctoral thesis topic that the author is working on, the author wants to talk about the approaches, research methods and concepts applied in a specific topic with the aim of discussing the research process and research methods of anthropologists in understanding and analyzing social practices.

The presentation consists of three parts. First, the author presents the selection of research methods and techniques for the thesis topic. Then, the author gives some specific examples of how he has used those research methods and techniques in the field. Finally, the important part of the presentation is the author's reflections on the process of building data for the thesis. These reflections are based on a number of theories in sociology and anthropology, such as 'social network analysis', 'anthropology of relationships, gifts and interdependence', 'holistic approach', 'intermediate approach', etc. Through specific illustrative examples, the author hopes to evoke our reflections on the specificity of anthropology in particular, and social science in general, which, in my opinion, is hidden deep in the precision of research methods.
