First Southeast Asian Psychology Conference "Human Happiness and Sustainable Development"

The first International Conference on Psychology with the theme “Human Well-being and Sustainable Development” was held in Southeast Asia. Vietnam had the honor of hosting this conference.

The objectives of the Conference, as set forth by the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP) on behalf of the co-organizing units, are: to strengthen the connection between research, training, and professional practice in psychology in Southeast Asia in particular, in Asia in general, and in many other regions of the world. This is an opportunity for Southeast Asian and international psychologists to exchange academic knowledge, share experiences, and contribute to the development of psychology in the region and internationally, in accordance with the culture, economy, society, and history of each nation, aiming to make people happier and society more sustainable. The Conference also helps to enhance the role and increase the contribution of psychology in social life; to improve the capacity of Vietnamese psychologists in particular, and Southeast Asian psychologists in general, through training courses on modern psychological research/practice techniques, methods, and theories relevant to practical requirements.

The organizations co-organizing the workshop include:: University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi and Institute of Psychology (Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences); International Association for Applied Psychology (IAAP), International Commission on Surveyors (ITC), International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP), Australian Psychological Society (APS) and Chinese Psychological Society (CPS).

Scientific CouncilThe conference included 21 members, all reputable scientists from 11 countries (Vietnam, Canada, India, China, Australia, Romania, Netherlands, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan); notably, Prof. Janel Gauthier (Canada), Prof. Lyn Littlefield (Australia), Prof. Dragos Iliesco (Romania), Prof. Kan Zhang (China), Prof. Janak Pandey (India), Prof. Hamdi Muluk (Institute of Psychology, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences), Prof. Najib Ahmad Marzuki (Malaysia), Prof. Akira Tsuda (Japan), and several scholars from Vietnam such as: Assoc. Prof. Dr. La Thi Thu Thuy, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Hao, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Thi Mai Huong (Institute of Psychology, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Truong Thi Khanh Ha, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Thu, Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Minh Duc (Faculty of Psychology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU Hanoi), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Tu Anh (Hue University of Education), Dr. Nguyen Thi Tram Anh (Da Nang University of Education), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Le Thu (Hanoi University of Education), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Xuan Mai (University of Labour and Social Affairs, Ho Chi Minh City).

Many activities will be organized during the Conference. Scientists, practicing psychologists, researchers, students, trainees, graduate students, and anyone interested in this topic can participate in the following activities during the Conference:

  1. Five intensive training courses aimed at enhancing capabilities took place on November 28th., with topics that are being widely discussed in the scientific community as well as in society.Treatment for victims of school bullying; Applying the Joint Declaration for the Development of Ethical Principles; Developing the Capacity and Influence of the Psychological Association in Advancing Psychological Science; How to Get Published.
  2. Scientific reports were presented in various formats from November 29th to December 1st, 2017: 13 Keynote speechesin a plenary session of world-class scientists in the field of thermodynamics;13 symposiums, 24 subcommittees; and 97 posters presenting diverse topics revolving around the question related toHuman happiness, health, and sustainable development in diverse contexts, fields, and environments, within the ever-changing diversity of culture and society.In total, excluding the Keynote papers, 454 reports from individuals and research groups from 35 countries and territories will be presented at this conference, with Vietnam accounting for approximately 50%. Vietnamese scientists come from 90 public and private institutions.
  3. 5 Roundtable ConferencesThe discussion focused on plans and trends for regional and international cooperation to promote the development of psychology in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, with topics including: Developing psychology as a professional occupation in Southeast Asia; Developing regional research cooperation in Southeast Asia; Developing psychological measurement scales for Southeast Asia; Teaching psychology in Southeast Asia; and Learning psychology in Southeast Asia.

170 full papers were peer-reviewed by two independent international and Vietnamese scientists, of which 150 were published in the conference proceedings with ISBN numbers. The proceedings were published in 3 volumes, organized by specialized topics, with a total of approximately 1600 printed pages.

RCP2017 in Numbers

The first International Conference on Psychology in Southeast Asia, hosted by Vietnam, is about to open.

  • The conference has received the agreement of 12 world-class psychology scientists to deliver keynote speeches in the most important areas of psychology.
  • The workshop will also include five capacity-building training sessions (primarily tailored to Vietnam's needs) led by world-renowned scientists.
  • There were 13 symposia discussing in-depth issues by leading scholars from around the world.
  • Twenty-four scientific subcommittees were formed.
  • A total of 454 research abstracts from individuals and research groups were submitted, with Vietnam accounting for over 50%. All abstracts underwent peer review.
  • The authors from Vietnam alone came from 90 organizations, both public and private.
  • Five roundtable conferences will be held to discuss cooperation and development plans for psychology in Southeast Asia and internationally.
  • In total, in addition to the keynote speakers' presentations, there will be 436 reports presented in various formats: symposia, subcommittees, and posters.
  • The number of countries with delegates attending the Conference is 35.
  • There are approximately 350 pages of English summaries of the submitted papers (currently being edited for language by native speakers).
  • The full papers submitted for publication in the conference proceedings totaled 170 (with Vietnam accounting for over 70%), and were peer-reviewed by two independent Vietnamese and international scientists.
  • The yearbook can have up to 1600 pages (not including the English summary).
  • The preparation time for this conference, from the official signing of the agreement with international organizations to the present, has been 9 months.
  • The Scientific Council consists of 21 members (including 10 from Vietnam).

It can be said that this is an international conference organized in Vietnam in accordance with the organizational principles and scientific criteria of the world, and has initially received high praise from the international advisory board.
