The First Southeast Asian Psychology Conference "Human Happiness and Sustainable Development"

The International Conference on Psychology with the theme “Human Well-being and Sustainable Development” was held for the first time in Southeast Asia. Vietnam was honored to host this Conference.

The objective of the Conference, which the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP) on behalf of the co-organizers put forward, is to strengthen the connection between research, training and professional practice of Psychology in Southeast Asia in particular, in Asia in general and in many other regions of the world. This is an opportunity for Southeast Asian and international psychologists to exchange academic knowledge, share experiences, and contribute to the development of Psychology in the region and internationally in accordance with the culture, economy, society and history of each country and ethnicity, in order to make people happier and society can develop in an increasingly sustainable direction. The Conference also helps to enhance the role and increase the contribution of Psychology in social life; improve the capacity of Vietnamese psychologists in particular, and Southeast Asia in general through training courses on techniques, methods and theories of modern psychological research/practice, suitable for practical requirements.

The co-organizing agencies of the workshop include: University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU and Institute of Psychology (Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences); International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP), International Surveying Commission (ITC), International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP), Australian Psychological Society (APS) and Chinese Psychological Society (CPS).

Scientific Councilwith the participation of 21 members who are prestigious scientists from 11 countries (Vietnam, Canada, India, China, Australia, Romania, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan); including Prof. Janel Gauthier (Canada), Prof. Lyn Littlefield (Australia), Prof. Dragos Iliesco (Romania), Prof. Kan Zhang (China), Prof. Janak Pandey (India), Prof. Hamdi Muluk (Indonesia), Prof. Najib Ahmad Marzuki (Malaysia), Prof. Akira Tsuda (Japan) and some scholars from Vietnam such as: Assoc. Prof. Dr. La Thi Thu Thuy, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Hao, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Thi Mai Huong (Institute of Psychology, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Truong Thi Khanh Ha, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Thu, Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Minh Duc (Faculty of Psychology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU), Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Tu Anh (Hue University of Education), Dr. Nguyen Thi Tram Anh (Da Nang University of Education), Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Le Thu (Hanoi University of Education), Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Xuan Mai (University of Labor and Social Affairs, Ho Chi Minh City).

There are many activities organized during the Conference. Scientists, practicing psychologists, researchers, students, trainees, postgraduates, and those interested in this issue can participate in the following activities during the Conference:

  1. 5 intensive training courses with the aim of capacity building took place on November 28, with topics that are being discussed a lot in the scientific community as well as in society (Treatment for victims of school bullying; Application of the Universal Declaration for the Development of Ethical Principles; Developing the capacity and influence of the Psychological Association in advancing psychological science; How to get published).
  2. Scientific reports are presented in various forms, from November 29 to December 1, 2017: 13 Keynotesin the plenary session of world-class TLH scientists;13 symposiums, 24 subcommittees; and 97 posters presenting various topics revolving around questions related tohappiness, human health, sustainable development in different contexts, fields, environments, in the diversity and constant change of culture and societyIn total, in addition to the Keynotes, there will be 454 reports from individuals and research groups from 35 countries and territories presented at this Conference, of which Vietnam accounts for about 50%. Vietnamese scientists come from 90 public and private organizations.
  3. 5 RoundtableDiscussing plans and trends of regional and international cooperation to promote the development of Psychology in Vietnam as well as in Southeast Asia with the following topics: Developing Psychology in Southeast Asia as a professional profession in Southeast Asia, Developing research cooperation in Southeast Asia; Developing psychological measurement scales for Southeast Asia, Teaching Psychology in Southeast Asia, Learning Psychology in Southeast Asia.

170 full-text articles were reviewed by two independent international and Vietnamese scientists, of which 150 articles were published in the conference proceedings with ISBN index. The proceedings were published in 3 volumes, according to specialized topics with a total of about 1,600 printed pages.

RCP2017 by the numbers

The first International Conference on Psychology held in Southeast Asia, hosted by Vietnam, is about to open.

  • The conference has received the consent of 12 world-class psychologists to give speeches as keynote speakers in the most important areas of Psychology.
  • The workshop will also feature five capacity building training sessions (mainly to meet Vietnam's needs) by world-renowned scientists.
  • There are 13 symposiums covering in-depth issues with world-leading scholars.
  • There are 24 scientific subcommittees formed.
  • There were 454 research abstracts submitted by individuals and research groups, of which Vietnam accounted for more than 50%. 100% of the abstracts were peer-reviewed.
  • The authors from Vietnam alone come from 90 public and private organizations.
  • Five roundtables will be held to discuss plans for cooperation and development of Psychology in the Southeast Asian region and internationally.
  • In total, in addition to the keynote speakers' papers, 436 reports will be presented in various formats: symposiums, panels, posters.
  • The number of countries with delegates attending the Conference is 35.
  • There are about 350 pages of English-only summaries of the submissions (currently being edited for language by native speakers)
  • Full-text reports submitted for publication in the Conference proceedings are 170 articles (Vietnam accounts for more than 70%), reviewed by 2 independent Vietnamese and international scientists.
  • The number of pages of the Proceedings can be up to 1600 pages (not including the English abstract).
  • The time to prepare for this Conference, from the official signing of the agreement with international organizations to now, is 9 months.
  • The number of participants in the Scientific Council is 21 (including 10 Vietnamese).

It can be said that this is an international conference held in Vietnam according to the world's organizational principles and scientific criteria, and has initially been highly appreciated by the international advisory board.
