The University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, in collaboration with the University of South Australia, organized the International Scientific Conference “Using English as a Medium of Instruction and Research in Social Sciences and Humanities in Vietnam: Policy and Methodological Issues” on December 15-16, 2018. 1. Reason for holding the workshop

Using English as a medium of instruction (EMI) is one of the orientations that many countries are interested in in internationalizing training and research activities at the university level. This is of interest and applied even in countries where English is the first language to attract students from countries where English is the second language.

Like other countries in the region such as Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia, Vietnam has recently been interested in the internationalization of higher education, especially finding ways to promote the internationalization of social sciences and humanities. In that trend, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, a leading training and research institution in social sciences and humanities in Vietnam, is also building specific directions to promote this orientation in order to improve the quality of training, research and attract international students to study at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Specifically, the school has been building programs and courses taught entirely in English, improving the quality of English for lecturers, promoting supplementary activities for international publication, etc.

Research, evaluation and development of solutions to promote the use of English in teaching and research (EMI) need to be focused on in order to create synchronous solutions from the perspective of lecturers, learners, learning materials, supplementary activities, etc. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi is currently participating with the University of South Australia in implementing an international project on "Connecting Vietnamese and Australian higher education institutions to address issues and challenges of the internationalization process". Within the framework of the project, in March 2018, 02 lecturers of the University attended a training program at the University of South Australia. Next, in December 2018, 5 experts from the University of South Australia will come to support lecturers of a number of universities through 2 days of training on issues related to teaching methods and the use of English in teaching and research. In conjunction with this event, the two schools jointly organized an international scientific conference with the theme:Using English as a medium of instruction in social sciences and humanities research in Vietnam: policy and methodological aspectsright after the training program in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang to create more opportunities for academic exchange and cooperation between the two universities (signed cooperation since 2010) on related issues.
