Program Overview
The Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) is President Barack Obama's initiative to strengthen leadership development and networking in ASEAN, deepen engagement with young leaders on key regional and global challenges, and promote people-to-people ties between the United States and young Southeast Asian leaders.
The program brings young Southeast Asian leaders to universities in the United States, where they can deepen their knowledge of regional issues, and share their experiences and perspectives. The program offers 250 fellowships to young leaders from 10 ASEAN countries for two years, 2015 and 2016.
The first class of the YSEALI Academic Fellowship (Environmental) will depart in June 2015. The program will include 20 student leaders from Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. This five-week, intensive academic program is designed to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the United States and to enhance their leadership skills. The program will include seminars, case studies, group presentations, and lectures, spaced out in a structured manner. In addition to classroom activities, the program will include study tours and field trips to various locations in the United States and opportunities for volunteering.
This is a full scholarship program. All costs of domestic and international travel, books, cultural activities, mailings, living expenses, and housing are covered by the U.S. Department of State.
