Program Overview
The Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) is an initiative of U.S. President Barack Obama aimed at strengthening leadership capacity and connectivity within ASEAN, deepening engagement with young leaders on key regional and global challenges, and fostering relationships between the people of the United States and young Southeast Asian leaders.
The program brings young Southeast Asian leaders to US universities, where they can deepen their understanding of regional issues and share their experiences and perspectives. The program awarded 250 scholarships to young leaders from 10 ASEAN countries over two years, 2015 and 2016.
The inaugural cohort of the YSEALI Young Leaders Scholarship (Environment theme) will depart in June 2015. The program is for 20 student leaders from Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. This is a five-week, advanced academic program designed to provide young leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States and enhance their leadership skills. The program will include well-structured seminars, research papers, group presentations, and lectures. In addition to classroom activities, the program includes study tours and field trips to various locations across the United States and opportunities for volunteer work.
This is a fully funded scholarship program. All domestic and international travel expenses, books, cultural activities, correspondence, living expenses, and accommodation are covered by the U.S. Department of State.
