Brett Blackshaw began a three-year posting as Political Counselor at US Embassy Hanoi in September 2015. He led a 16-member team under the Ambassador responsible for all reporting, analysis, and advocacy on political matters, including promoting human rights and rule of law, and expanding cooperation on maritime security and regional concerns, including the South China Sea.
Since joining the Foreign Service in 1998, Brett has served at Embassy Bangkok, the US Mission to the United Nations in New York, Embassy Tokyo, and Embassy Beijing. At the UN, he worked as Aide to the US Permanent Representativeduring the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent US response. In Tokyo, he was Deputy in the Political-Military Unit, handling issues related to the US Navy 7th Fleet presence in Japan, ballistic missile defense, and deepening operational cooperation in the US-Japan security alliance.
AsVietnam Desk Officer, he helped launch the Lower Mekong Initiative, an annual meeting between the Secretary of State and his counterparts from Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia to discuss water security, health and development issues. In Beijing, he ran the Political Section's Regional Unit, in charge of reporting and advocacy on all issues related to China's relations with Japan, North and South Korea, cyber-security, non-proliferation, and maritime security.
Brett's foreign languages include Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, and some Thai. He was born in the UK, and holds degrees from Cornell University and Columbia University.
