Vice Rector of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Nguyen Hoang Hai and Head of Training Department Nguyen Dinh Duc chaired the conference.
The Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) organizes the a+b training model with the aim of not only helping each training unit participating in the combined model to improve the quality of training, supplement the weak resources of their unit, maximize shared resources within VNU, save resources and time, but also helping the overall system to be interconnected and linked between training units within VNU to develop and grow stronger.
Currently, the a+b training programs of the University of Education and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy both apply the regulations in Decision 3079 issued by VNU (which clearly stipulates the mechanism for student management; lecturer coordination; and financial management for units implementing this model).
Among the training units participating in the a+b model, the University of Natural Sciences and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities are units with extensive experience in teaching basic science subjects, boasting a large, high-quality, and dedicated faculty. Under this model, early-year students of the University of Education study with leading professors from the University of Natural Sciences and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities; early-year students of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy study with leading professors in the modern laboratories of the University of Natural Sciences.
Furthermore, the successful organizational and management model of training at Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) is also supported by the coordination of specialized units in teaching activities such as the University of Foreign Languages (with foreign language subjects), the University of Economics and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (with political theory subjects), the Center for National Defense and Security Education, and the Center for Physical Education and Sports. Thanks to the development of the shared resource model and the a+b model, clearly demonstrated in the quality of training in the pedagogical and health-related fields, there has been rapid development of the two newly established faculties: the Faculty of Education (1999), later the University of Education (from 2009), and the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy (2010), later the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (from 2020).

Nguyen Quy Thanh, Rector of the University of Education, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, shared the a+b training model.
At the conference, delegates highlighted the current advantages and difficulties in implementing the a+b model at their respective units in order to exchange ideas, discuss, and propose synchronized solutions regarding appropriate management and financial mechanisms.
Representing the University of Natural Sciences, Vice Rector Tran Quoc Binh delivered a speech at the conference.
The delegates participating in the conference unanimously agreed that Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) needs to continue promoting and developing, improving the quality and effectiveness of the a+b model. This is a pioneering and unique training model of VNU, demonstrating the connection and exploitation of the strengths of inter-unit linkages and the strengths of the VNU - "One-VNU" model, thereby improving the quality of training and research, helping students after graduation to have a solid common knowledge foundation of a multi-disciplinary, multi-field higher education institution.
Representatives from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy shared the advantages of training students under the a+b model.
Delegates made several suggestions to unify the development of this program, such as: continuing to entrust the degree-granting unit with managing the training program and student affairs immediately upon completion of the enrollment process; coordinating the Training & Student Affairs Departments of the affiliated units in managing student data and scheduling timetables; the Vietnam National University, Hanoi coordinating through a synchronized training management software, acting as the central point for directing and coordinating human resources, finances, shared facilities, and close collaboration between the training program management units.
Deputy Head of Training Department, Vo Thi Minh Trang, reported on the success of the a+b model implemented by Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
Previously, the introductory report of the Training Department of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) clearly stated: VNU has developed a rigorous training regulation, integrating with international standards, perfecting the credit-based training model, and building programs based on course modules; it has issued regulations on training according to the a+b model; training linked to research and individualization through research groups; and it has developed regulations and policies on training talented and high-quality students, as well as pilot training programs - all of which are distinctive training models of VNU - always prioritizing training quality, linking training with research and practice, and the employability of students as the top criteria.
To date, the implementation of the a+b training model at VNU has undergone several adjustments to suit practical conditions, but the overarching philosophy remains the same: organizing training through collaboration between member and affiliated units of VNU to fully exploit the advantages in human resources and facilities, and to maximize the strengths of each unit with the "One VNU" perspective.
Concluding the workshop, Vice Director of VNU, Nguyen Hoang Hai, requested that relevant units, when implementing the a+b model, fully understand their responsibilities in cooperation and coordination, and effectively implement the regulations on a+b training, for the common benefit of VNU under the "One VNU" model, and adhere closely to the vision and mission of their respective units so that both units a and b can develop and grow stronger together.
The Vice Director also requested that the universities of Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, Medicine and Pharmacy, and Education organize a review, with the participation of relevant units, to assess the advantages and difficulties in the implementation of the a+b model, and specifically review and report to VNU; the Personnel and Organization Department should review and report on human resources, and the Planning and Finance Department should report on revenue, expenditure, and financial sources for the a+b model so that VNU leadership can make appropriate decisions and adjustments.
In the near future, the a+b training model will be perfected and further expanded to many fields throughout Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
