On July 6-7, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) held its second graduation ceremony in 2024, awarding bachelor's degrees to nearly 1,300 new graduates. Among them were 27 valedictorians from various departments of the university. With a GPA of 3.82, Nguyen Thi Thuy Hien excelled as the valedictorian of the Journalism major, Institute of Journalism and Communication Training. Let's listen to Thuy Hien's sharing about her academic journey and secrets to success!

PVHello Thuy Hien, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us today. First, congratulations on graduating as the valedictorian of the Journalism program at the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training. After four years of hard work, you must have some very special study secrets. Could you share them with us?
Thuy HienFollowing the old Vietnamese saying, "Diligence compensates for lack of intelligence," I have created a scientific and personalized study plan and schedule. I attend all classes, absorb all the knowledge imparted by the lecturers, and always ask critical questions to gain a deeper understanding. Outside of class, I review the material, do exercises, and prepare for the next lessons. I don't differentiate between core and elective subjects; I focus on mastering all subjects and studying them thoroughly according to the different exam formats. For example, for multiple-choice exams, I focus on the keywords in each question to accurately select the correct answer. For essay exams, in addition to the knowledge from lectures, textbooks, reference books, and monographs, I often seek out additional data and evidence related to real-world situations to apply to my work in order to achieve the best possible results.
In particular, group learning methods are very important and useful for university students. Therefore, I often confidently share my thoughts, leverage my strengths, overcome my weaknesses, am willing to learn, and combine the talents of all members so that the whole group can achieve high results.

PVBesides her classes, does Thuy Hien participate in extracurricular activities such as scientific research, youth union activities in general, volunteer work, and arts and culture movements inside and outside the school?
Thuy HienAs a Party member, I am very interested in and actively participate in extracurricular activities. I participated in scientific research under the guidance of Professor Phan Van Kien and received an honorable mention. I also participated in most of the class activities, the Youth Union and Student Association activities, and am a member of the "Flame of Youth 20" Club. In 2021-2022, I received the title of Outstanding Young Person at the grassroots level. In addition, I also participated in activities at the dormitory (representative committee, communication committee, and security committee) and in my local area (summer activities, Youth Union and Party activities in my hometown of Quang Nam).
During my four years of study, I was honored to be recognized as a Party member who "Outstandingly completed my duties" in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

PVStudying is a process that demands a lot of effort and time from students. With a rather limited time, how did Thuy Hien manage to balance her studies, extracurricular activities, part-time job, and family?
Thuy HienFrom my second year, I started entering the job market by working as a contributor for the Vietnam Law Newspaper, the Journalists and Public Opinion Newspaper, or as a copywriter (creating advertising and marketing content, etc.). Balancing my time between studying, extracurricular activities, and part-time work became a challenging task, requiring me to scientifically plan my studies and part-time work. To achieve this, I prioritized arranging my study schedule effectively based on a thorough understanding of the major's curriculum (registering for a reasonable number of credits, choosing courses that match my abilities).
Regarding student union activities, I don't try to join too many clubs at once. Instead, I choose one or two clubs that I enjoy the most, so that I can contribute to student union work, hone my skills, and avoid affecting my studies.
For part-time jobs, I usually schedule them during my free time or outside of school hours. Additionally, after dinner or while taking a walk, I take the opportunity to call my family and boyfriend. Although I have less time for sleeping and socializing, I still occasionally dedicate time on weekends to "relaxing youth," seeking out famous landmarks in the capital to visit and explore…

PVWhat advice would you give to students in subsequent cohorts and to the new students of the QH-2024-X cohort who are preparing to enroll?
Thuy HienIf I had to give advice to future students, I would suggest they focus on their studies, obtain language certificates early, actively participate in extracurricular activities to improve their knowledge, communication skills, social skills, and critical thinking abilities, and dedicate time to part-time work to gain experience. Of course, to achieve this, they need to create a scientific schedule to balance their studies, social activities, part-time work, and personal life.
PV:After graduation, what are your plans and goals for the future?
Thuy HienNo matter what anyone says, I remain wholeheartedly devoted to journalism and my future plans are still focused on it. More specifically, my short-term goals include continuing to work as a contributor for Quang Nam Newspaper (a media outlet that has helped me learn a great deal about journalism), or another newsroom in Hanoi. At the same time, I will further develop my foreign language skills, focusing on communication skills (English and Chinese) to meet the demands of my work and studies.
In particular, I was directly admitted to the Master's program in Journalism at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, so my long-term goal and plan is to complete this program.
Thank you, Thuy Hien, for your valuable sharing. We wish you continued success on your chosen path! The school always welcomes you to continue pursuing higher levels of education.
