The Terry Fox Run, also known as the “Run of Hope,” is in memory of Terry Fox, a young Canadian man with bone cancer who decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

In 1980, at the age of 18, despite having only one leg after surgery for cancer, Terry Fox ran an average of 42 km per day for 143 days, covering a total of 5,373 km. Halfway through his planned journey, Terry was forced to stop his “Run of Hope” because the cancer had spread to his lungs. He died shortly thereafter at the age of 22. Since then, the Terry Fox Run to support cancer research has been held annually at more than 10,000 locations around the world with millions of participants, making it the world’s largest single-day fundraising event. More than $400 million has been raised from this run.

The Terry Fox Run in Vietnam was first held in 1997 in Ho Chi Minh City. Since then, 60,000 people have participated in the runs in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, raising more than 3.5 billion VND. The 2007 Terry Fox Run in Hanoi with 7,000 participants, raising 436 million VND continued to be the fourth largest run in the world outside Canada, putting Vietnam in third place in the list of countries with the most participants and 10th place in the list of countries raising the most money.

The 2008 Terry Fox Run in Hanoi will be held at Thien Quang Lake on November 23. Money raised from it will go to support a research project conducted by the Oncology Hospital.

At the talk, students watched a documentary introducing Terry Fox's bravery in overcoming his illness and his extraordinary efforts to realize the dream of a good life for cancer patients around the world. Representatives of the Hanoi Run Organizing Committee introduced the race rules and called on students to participate. Next, doctors at the Hanoi Oncology Hospital also gave a talk about cancer - causes, prevention and treatment.
