11. Summary of new results of the thesis

The thesis is the first systematic research work in Vietnam on the British-Vietnamese contact relationship in the 17th-19th centuries. Based on the exploitation of domestic and international sources and a multi-dimensional approach, the thesis raises and solves theses of scientific and practical significance; clearly stating the goals and basic motivations that urged the British and Western countries to penetrate Vietnam - East Asia and the transformation of the relationship from commercial and economic nature to diplomatic and political nature. In addition, the thesis also points out the calculations of the EIC when coming as well as the changes in the way of penetrating and establishing a position in Vietnam in each specific period. At the same time, to clarify the calculations of the EIC and the British government, the thesis places the Vietnamese market in a comparative advantage with other potential and rich markets in East Asia.

Along with the above contents, the thesis attempts to systematically present and study the policies and responses of Vietnamese monarchies to explain the reasons leading to the failure of Britain in adjusting to the priority choice of Britain with other East Asian markets. Hopefully, the thesis will be a source of reference for the training and research of those who study history, do history and are interested in international relations, especially the study of Vietnam's relationship with some East Asian countries and Western powers. With the achieved results, the thesis will contribute new sources of data; perspectives, approaches and some new interpretations in the study of the history of relations between the two countries of Britain and Vietnam in the 17th and 19th centuries.

11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis

The thesis is the first systematic academic work in Vietnam on the relationship between Vietnam and England since the 17ththcentury to the 19thcentury. Based on research domestic and international data from multi-dimensional approaches, the thesis raises issues in both scientific and practice terms; it points out the goals and motivations of England and other Western countries to penetrate into Vietnam and East Asia as well as changes of the relationships from commercial and economic characteristics to diplomats and political ones. Besides, the thesis also states EIC's intentions when it went to Vietnam as well as changes in its ways of penetrating and establishing its position in Vietnam in certain periods. In order to analyze the intentions of EIC and England Government, the thesis has put Vietnam's market in the comparison with other potential and prosperous markets in East Asia.

Together with the above mentioned contents, the thesis scientifically presents and researches the policies and responses of Vietnamese monarchical regimes to interpret the causes of England's failure. I hope that the thesis will be used as a source of reference for people who study and research history and people who are interested in international affairs, especially the relations between Vietnam and some East Asian nations as well as Western powers.
