11. Summary of new results of the thesis
The thesis is a scientific work that studies the case study of the language situation in an ethnic minority area in the Northwest region of Vietnam. Specifically, the language situation of the Mong ethnic community in Bac Yen district, Son La province. The research results of the thesis have the following new points:
- Approaching the content of language situations from three criteria of quantity, quality and language attitudes, the thesis has contributed to systematizing and clarifying academically a number of concepts of sociolinguistics such as: language situations, bilingualism/multilingualism, language competence, mother tongue, second language, language contact and language attitudes, etc.
- Researching the language situation in the Mong ethnic group has a very important meaning. The language problem in the Mong ethnic group in Vietnam in the past and present has had a significant impact on the socio-economic development of this ethnic group. The content of the language situation of the Mong ethnic group in Bac Yen district, Son La province is a case described in detail, clearly and vividly. The research results of the thesis have a certain contribution value both in terms of theory for sociolinguistics as well as in terms of practice in planning and implementing language policies in the Mong ethnic group in Vietnam.
12. Practical application
- The research results of the thesis can be a useful reference for studies on linguistics, ethnology, sociology, especially studies on sociolinguistics of the Mong ethnic group. The thesis is also a valuable reference for managers, policy makers on language as well as education policy in the Mong ethnic group.
13. Further research directions
- The research results of the thesis on the linguistic situation of the Mong community in Bac Yen district, Son La province also suggest further research directions. That is, (1) the issue of improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning Mong script in general and in the new general education program in particular; (2) the issue of improving and enhancing the quality of teaching Vietnamese for Mong students in Bac Yen; (3) the issue of language ecology with the sustainable development of a multilingual community; (4) the issue of language associated with tourism development in ethnic minority areas.
