11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis
This dissertation is a case study on the linguistic situation in an ethnic minority region of Northwest Vietnam. Specifically, it examines the linguistic situation of the Hmong ethnic community in Bac Yen district, Son La province. The research findings of this dissertation present the following novel points:
- Approaching the content of linguistic situations from three criteria: quantity, quality, and linguistic attitude, the thesis has contributed to systematizing and clarifying academically several concepts of sociolinguistics such as: linguistic situation, bilingualism/multilingualism, linguistic competence, mother tongue, second language, linguistic contact, and linguistic attitude, etc.
- Studying the linguistic situation in the Hmong ethnic region is of great importance. The issue of language within the Hmong community in Vietnam, both in the past and present, has a significant impact on the socio-economic development of this ethnic group. The linguistic situation of the Hmong community in Bac Yen district, Son La province, is a case study described in detail, clearly, and vividly. The research results of this thesis make a valuable contribution, both theoretically to sociolinguistics and practically to the planning and implementation of language policies in the Hmong ethnic region of Vietnam.
12. Practical applications
- The research findings of this thesis can serve as a useful reference for studies in linguistics, ethnology, and sociology, especially studies on the sociolinguistics of the Hmong ethnic group. The thesis is also a valuable reference for managers and policymakers regarding language and education policies in the Hmong ethnic region.
13. Future research directions
- The research results of the thesis on the linguistic situation of the Mong community in Bac Yen district, Son La province also suggest further research directions. These are, (1) the issue of improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning the Mong language in general and in the new general education program in particular; (2) the issue of improving and enhancing the quality of teaching Vietnamese to Mong students in Bac Yen; (3) the issue of linguistic ecology with the sustainable development of a multilingual community society; (4) the issue of language associated with tourism development in ethnic minority areas.
