- The thesis has outlined the formation process of Hai Phong city, from a wild land at the coastal estuary to a medieval town and a modern urban area by 1888.

- The thesis has sketched a picture of the economic life of Hai Phong city in modern times (from 1888 to 1945) with economic types of industry, commerce, handicrafts, agriculture, services, and fishing, focusing on clarifying the characteristics of a developed industrial and commercial city in Northern Vietnam in modern times.

- The thesis clarifies the characteristics of management institutions, changes in population and population structure, the emergence and changes in classes, and revolutionary movements from 1930 to 1945 in Hai Phong city.

- The thesis reconstructs the rich and complex cultural life of Hai Phong city in the following aspects: education, health, sports, the appearance and activities of press and publishing, cultural characteristics ensuring the lives of coastal residents as well as religious life, beliefs, types of theater, and festivals in Hai Phong city in modern times.
