Professor Dr. Lam Thi My Dung and her passion for Vietnamese archaeology, history, and culture.

Thursday - May 18, 2023 03:31
In early 2023, Professor Lam Thi My Dung was one of the few female scientists to receive a Certificate of Merit from the Director of Hanoi National University for her outstanding achievements in scientific and technological research and innovation in 2022.
GS.TS Lâm Thị Mỹ Dung và niềm đam mê với Khảo cổ học, lịch sử và văn hoá Việt Nam
Professor Dr. Lam Thi My Dung was born in 1959 in Hoa Binh province. After receiving her PhD in History and Archaeology from Kliment Okhridxki University, Sophia, Bulgaria, in 1989 Dr. Lam Thi My Dung began working at the Department of History, Hanoi University (now the Department of History, University of Social Sciences and Humanities).
And this is also where Professor Lam Thi My Dung taught and conducted research on history, culture, and archaeology, and was continuously associated for nearly 35 years before retiring. Professor Lam Thi My Dung once shared:

“I often think that the profession chooses the person, rather than the person choosing the profession. I came to archaeology by chance. In 1979, after passing the university entrance exam, I was sent to study history abroad. At the end of the first semester of my first year, I registered to major in archaeology, even though I had no prior knowledge of the field. At that time, the name of the field of archaeology evoked many fascinating things, and I had a feeling that it suited my personality. Archaeology would give me wings to travel to different lands and discover new things. I have been dedicated to and pursued a career in archaeology ever since… From that initial chance encounter when I chose the field, archaeology gradually became my passion without me even realizing it.”
When I'm passionately engaged in archaeological exploration, even a small discovery brings me endless joy. We archaeologists liken field trips to "free" vacations, where scientists exchange sweat and the relentless pursuit of research. Often, we sweat profusely without knowing whether we'll achieve any results… We just keep going, relentlessly…”

Throughout her more than 35 years of service, Professor Lam Thi My Dung has mentored, guided, and instilled a burning passion for archaeology, Vietnamese history, and culture in thousands of students, trainees, and researchers. Many of her students have now become experts, researchers, lecturers, and key personnel in universities and research institutes both domestically and internationally.

The idea of establishing the first school museum in Vietnam.

Professor Dr. Lam Thi My Dung was the Head of the Archaeology Department, Faculty of History, and also the person who proposed the idea of establishing and served as the first Director of the Museum of Anthropology, belonging to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (from 2004 to 2020). This was a very novel and bold idea because at that time and even now, it remains the first university museum of the social sciences and humanities universities in the country. Formed on the basis of a number of archaeological artifact collections gathered from excavations and fieldwork by the faculty and students of the Archaeology Department, the Museum of Anthropology is not only a place to preserve and display valuable historical artifacts, but also a "special lecture hall," making lessons about history and culture more vivid, visual, and truly engaging. At the same time, the Museum of Anthropology is also an attractive destination that draws the attention of all scientists, domestic and international guests, and foreign students when they come to study and work at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Ms. Lam Thi My Dung, Director of the Museum of Anthropology (University of Social Sciences and Humanities), introduced the exhibits and activities of the Museum to Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan and the visiting delegation (2014).
As the director of the Museum of Anthropology, Professor Dr. Lam Thi My Dung has made significant contributions to the collection, supplementation, storage, and preservation of historical artifacts, as well as the development of collaborative training and research activities between the Museum and scientific organizations both domestically and internationally.

Scientific research achievements

With a passion for studying history and culture, especially archaeology, and with a prolific writing ability, over the past 20 years, Professor Dr. Lam Thi My Dung has chaired and participated in nearly 20 scientific projects at various levels, and is the author of more than 100 books and articles published in prestigious domestic and international publishing houses and journals.
