On July 31, Vietnam Education Electronic Newspaper published an interview with Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong (Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities). With many years of experience in training and admissions, Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong made predictions about the large difference in admission scores between some "hot" majors and other basic science majors, and at the same time gave advice and experience to candidates before completing their application for university admission to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. USSH Media would like to respectfully introduce to our readers the full text of the interview.

July 27, 2022,Hanoi National University issued Notice No. 2495/TB-VNU on input quality assurance threshold in 2022For the method of using high school graduation exam results, it is 20 points (without coefficient), including regional and subject priority points (if any). This is also the common standard of the entire Hanoi National University to ensure input quality.

Reporter: Dear Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong, What's new about the admission work of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities this year compared to previous years (new admission majors, changing quotas between methods...)?

Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong: In 2022, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities will enroll 1,680 students in 31 majors/training programs and basically maintain the same regular university admission methods as last year, with only a few innovations and adjustments to suit the changes in the admission regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and the admission regulations of Hanoi National University. Specifically including:

Adjust the conditions for direct admission and priority admission according to the specific regulations of Hanoi National University, foreign language conditions for high-quality training programs, and high school exam score conditions for groups of subjects with international foreign language certificates in the direction of improving the quality of input sources.

In 2022, the first year of pilot implementation of scholarships and support for students of basic science majors of the University according to the regulations of Hanoi National University, including: free tuition, free accommodation, priority in participating in scientific research and scientist incubation programs, priority when considering other scholarships and living expenses support of 20 million VND/school year for 09 majors: Han Nom, History, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Political Science, Anthropology, Vietnamese Studies, Linguistics, Literature.

This year, the School also implemented online registration with separate admission methods to facilitate candidates, in accordance with the admission registration method of the Ministry of Education and Training.

In addition to the above new points, candidates applying for university admission this year also need to pay close attention to the innovations and adjustments in the admission regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training to avoid mistakes and choose the right major they love.

Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training announced the 2022 high school exam score distribution, showing that it is lighter than in 2021. Will this affect the expected admission score to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, ma'am?

Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong: The Ministry of Education and Training has made many adjustments to avoid the "rain of 10 points", but there are some subjects with quite clear adjustments, such as English. If last year the rate of papers scoring 8 points or higher was 18.3%, this year, the rate is 11.9%.

However, basically, this year's high school exam scores are still quite high, some social sciences and humanities groups may even increase compared to last year.

For example, in Literature, the number of exams with a score of 7 or higher was 414,969/981,407, reaching 42.28%, while last year's rate was 41.7%.

In History, in 2021 there were only 266 scores of 10 and the number of scores of 8 or higher was 5.44%. This year there were 1,779 scores of 10 and the percentage of candidates scoring 8 or higher was 119,601/659,667, reaching 18.1%.

This year, the admission threshold for the method of using the 2022 high school graduation exam results of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is 20 points (without coefficient), including regional and subject priority points (if any). This is also the common standard of the entire Hanoi National University to ensure input quality.

The trend of schools diversifying admission methods, giving priority to candidates with good academic performance, international certificates or participating in separate exams organized by the school is inevitable if the high school exam still maintains the main goal of graduation as it does now.

On the positive side, candidates now have many options for schools and majors that suit their academic performance, interests, and abilities. High competition mainly occurs at top schools and “hot” majors, so candidates with low academic results still have the opportunity to apply to schools and majors with less competition.

In addition to the wide open opportunities, candidates will face challenges in finding information and choosing suitable aspirations for themselves. Therefore, candidates need to proactively learn and master the admission regulations to analyze and register aspirations that are suitable for their academic achievements.

In 2021, some majors of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities had high admission scores such as Journalism (28 points); Oriental Studies (29 points), International Studies (28.8 points)... So how does the school predict the fluctuation in admission scores of these majors this year?

Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong: The University of Social Sciences and Humanities enrolls 31 majors/training programs with a wide range of admission scores, with a big difference between the "hot" majors with high social demand such as Journalism, Public Relations, Oriental Studies, etc. and basic science majors that are more selective of students.

The current university admissions process is creating maximum conditions for candidates to choose their majors according to their interests, abilities and academic results. Therefore, the first principle candidates need to remember is to put their favorite wishes first, prioritizing the majors they love or have the best strengths/abilities, then the "backup" wishes.

Especially if the high school graduation exam results are not too high, candidates should avoid registering their wishes according to the majority, and should not only focus on "hot" majors with many applicants to avoid losing the opportunity to be admitted to university.

Currently, the trend of building training programs in schools is highly interconnected and linked. Many schools implement a model of studying 2 training programs at the same time (dual degree) for students, including the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Therefore, candidates can choose to register their wishes for some majors of the school to increase their chances of passing the university entrance exam and then continue to study a second major during their studies at the school.

Do you have any advice for candidates in making their wishes when this year all admission methods will be considered at the same time?

Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong:To increase their chances of being admitted to university, many candidates have used each school's own early admission methods. However, candidates have applied to schools according toAdmission methodEarly applicants must still register their wishes on the Ministry of Education and Training system and be recognized as admitted according to their highest wishes.

When registering for admission, candidates need to carefully look up information about school code, admission code, admission method code, and combination code that the training institution publicly announces in the admission plan.

In addition, candidates should also carefully study the recruitment information of training institutions on the recruitment plan and follow the regulations of the training institutions regarding conditions, documents, procedures, and recruitment time. Candidates absolutely must not register their wishes for majors, training programs, or recruitment methods that do not meet the requirements.

How should candidates arrange their wishes according to admission methods to pass the desired university?

Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong: After knowing the exam results and carefully studying the admission information of the schools they intend to apply to, candidates will consider and consider registering their wishes on the Ministry of Education and Training's Online Admission System. Please note the following principles:

No limit on the number of registration wishes: Accordingly, candidates should put their most favorite wishes on top, then prioritize from top to bottom. Absolutely DO NOT prioritize the 1st and 2nd wishes for majors that are sure to pass, because that will reduce your benefits. Prioritize the majors that you love or have the best strengths/abilities.

Note the specific regulations for admission based on high school exam results of each school (there may be limits on scores and additional conditions in the application), avoid wasting an application or being eliminated due to these conditions when enrolling.

If one of the above choices fails, it will not affect the choices below. Therefore, if your favorite majors are all “hot” majors, candidates should have some backup plans to apply to majors with previous years’ benchmark scores lower than their high school exam results.

Sincerely thank Associate Professor Dang Thi Thu Huong.
