In the context of digital media and artificial intelligence dramatically changing how universities connect with students and society, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's Trade Union, in collaboration with the Institute of Broadcasting and Communication, organized a communication skills training program for the university's communication staff.

More than 40 officials and lecturers in charge of communications at units affiliated with Hanoi University of Science and Technology participated in the training course.

Dr. Phan Van Kien, Director, and MSc. Doan Duy Anh, lecturer at the Institute of Broadcasting and Communication, directly teach, providing practical knowledge and skills closely aligned with the requirements of digital transformation in university communication.

More than 40 officials and lecturers in charge of communications at units affiliated with Hanoi University of Science and Technology participated in the training course.

The fact that a leading national journalism and media training institution is directly training trade union officials from a technical school demonstrates the growing need for professional communication skills among those working in grassroots organizations.

This also affirms the reputation of the Institute for Training and Information Technology in transferring knowledge beyond the scope of academic training.

The program is designed into three sessions, covering writing skills, visual skills, and the application of new technologies, closely aligned with the practical needs of communications professionals in various organizations and agencies.

The first lesson focused on skills in writing news articles for websites and social media: identifying different types of news, writing news using the inverted pyramid model, extracting compelling information from reception news, as well as common article types on the organization's website.

MSc. Doan Duy Anh, lecturer at the Institute of Broadcasting and Communication, shared about the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in university communication.

One key focus is social media storytelling skills, helping students transform administrative website posts into more relatable content for fan pages. Students directly practice idea generation, story writing, and content format conversion, rather than simply absorbing theory.

The second session focused on mobile phone photography and videography skills – a common tool but often underutilized in organizational communications. The content included how to operate the phone for vertical and horizontal photography, composition principles such as the rule of thirds and balanced composition, and basic videography techniques.

Students are guided in storytelling through images and videos, from selecting subjects to choosing camera angles that fit the narrative, and practice immediately in class.

The third session covered the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in university communications. Participants were introduced to an overview of common types of AI in communications, emphasizing that AI should serve as a supporting tool, not a replacement, for human communications professionals.

The practical session delves into using AI to suggest article ideas, create headlines and lead paragraphs, summarize text, support writing using the 5W1H model, and generate images and short videos for multimedia content production.

Participants also learned the skills to write clear, structured prompts, along with attention to quality control of AI content such as fact-checking and maintaining the institution's tone. The program concluded with two assignments: writing a complete news article about a school event using AI, and producing a poster and a short video with AI support.

Combining concise theory with hands-on practice in each session, the program is designed to be practical, enabling union officials to immediately apply their writing, photography, videography, and AI skills to their communication work within their organizations after the course.

The course received many positive reviews from the participants. In his concluding remarks, Dr. Bui Duc Hung, Chairman of the Trade Union of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, shared that, based on surveys of the participants, the training course achieved results exceeding the organizers' expectations. Dr. Hung also expressed his desire to continue receiving the support of the Institute of Broadcasting and Communication Technology in more in-depth training courses to further enhance the communication skills of the lecturers at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Participants receive training certificates after completing the course.

This is one of the activities that shows the Institute of Journalism and Communication, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, not only focuses on formal training but also expands its role in advising and training communication skills for agencies and units outside the university, contributing to spreading journalism and communication expertise to the community.
