The work of archiving, preserving, and promoting the linguistic and cultural values ​​of ethnic groups in Northern Europe.

This was the topic of the presentation organized by the Faculty of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies on April 29, 2026.

The speaker for the program is Professor Olaf Husby – a reputable expert in the field of linguistics from Norway, currently working at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Professor Husby is the principal investigator and participant in many important research projects related to phonology, contrastive linguistics, and language teaching for foreigners.

In his opening remarks at the seminar, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Binh – Head of the Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies – expressed that this event not only brings new perspectives to the study of ethnic minority languages ​​and language policy in Vietnam, but also provides an opportunity for academic exchange between Vietnam and Norway in particular, and between Vietnam and the Nordic countries in general.

In his presentation, Professor Olaf Husby provided a comprehensive and systematic overview of:

- The history of the formation and development of the Norse languages, in relation to the Germanic language family and the process of language change over time.

- The structure and branching of language groups, including Scandinavian languages ​​such as Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, as well as related languages.

- Minority languages, notably the Sami language group, face challenges in maintaining and reviving themselves in the context of globalization and cultural assimilation.

- The role of archiving, language policy, and education in preserving and promoting the linguistic and cultural values ​​of ethnic communities.

The presentation not only provided foundational knowledge but also suggested many new approaches in linguistic research, particularly the relationship between language, culture, policy, and community identity.

The discussion was lively, with many insightful questions and exchanges from lecturers, researchers, doctoral candidates, graduate students, and undergraduates. The topics of discussion focused on:

- Comparing the experiences of preserving minority languages ​​between Nordic countries and Vietnam.

- Applying language policy models in practice in Vietnam

- The role of education and technology in maintaining and developing language.

Through this, the program has contributed to connecting academic theory with research and teaching practices in Vietnam, opening up many avenues for future cooperation and development.

The presentation was one of the key activities in the Faculty's series of commemorative events, clearly demonstrating its international orientation in training and scientific research, connecting with international experts and scholars, and promoting linguistic and cultural values ​​in a global context.

At the end of the program, representatives from the Faculty of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies respectfully presented Professor Olaf Husby with a commemorative gift as a token of deep gratitude for his academic contributions and meaningful presence.
