Founded in 1906 in Hanoi, the University of Indochina (Université Indochinoise) was the first university in Vietnam and Indochina to follow the Western model, marking a significant shift in Vietnamese education from the traditional Confucian model to a modern higher education system based on European standards.

The University of Indochina (Université Indochinoise), founded in 1906 in Hanoi, was the first university in Vietnam and Indochina to follow the Western model.
Despite bearing the imprint of its colonial context, Indochina University became a training ground for many outstanding intellectuals, contributing to the formation of a workforce in science, administration, and culture. More importantly, from that environment, a new academic spirit gradually emerged: valuing science, rational thinking, modern research methods, and a desire for social reform.
Following the victory of the August Revolution in 1945, in the context of a newly independent nation, President Ho Chi Minh and the Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam decided to establish the Vietnam National University. This event demonstrated the strategic vision of the Party and the State regarding the role of higher education in the nation's destiny. From this point, Vietnamese higher education entered a new era – an era of training intellectuals to serve the cause of nation-building and the defense of national independence.
Continuing that tradition, Hanoi University, established in 1956, has become a symbol of Vietnamese academic scholarship for many decades. It is home to many of the country's leading educators, scientists, and cultural figures; and has been the cradle for training tens of thousands of outstanding scientists, administrators, artists, and intellectuals for Vietnam.
From this institution, many fundamental sciences were taught and researched systematically in Vietnamese for the first time. More than just a leading center for training and scientific research, Hanoi University is also a democratic, humane, and liberal academic environment that values self-study, independent thinking, scientific debate, and social responsibility.
