In his opening speech at the meeting, Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh mentioned the great traditional foundations that generations of teachers and scientists of the University have built to create a University of Social Sciences and Humanities with the prestige and recognized brand as it is today. Inheriting that tradition, the young staff has affirmed their qualifications, knowledge, courage and created their own identity in research and training activities.
Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh spoke at the meeting
With the philosophy of liberal education, the School is striving to innovate its thinking in development philosophy and management activities to move towards a new image: dynamic, creative and integrated. Along with that, dialogue activities with students and staff are more practical and open. The School is doing its best to create conditions for young staff to fully develop their capacity and intelligence with the expectation that teachers will reach new heights in research and training, integrating at a level equal to that of international colleagues.
There are 114 lecturers under 35 years old out of a total of 368 teaching and research staff in the whole school - this is the team that will shoulder the responsibility of developing the School in the future.
But the Principal also asked: “Are we sleeping on the glorious past, while the young staff from other universities are constantly making progress?” In the past 3 years, how many young staff have attended international conferences abroad, even though the University has a policy of financial support for participating individuals? How many young staff have registered to receive financial support from the University for international English exams? Among the large and international conferences organized by the University, how many young staff have actively participated to learn and improve their expertise? These are questions that young staff must ponder to orient their own future.

Regarding domestic scientific publications, in 2015, the whole school had 550 scientific articles, of which young staff under 35 years old had 165 articles, accounting for 30%. In 2016, there were 540 scientific articles and young staff were the authors of 128 articles. In 2017, there were 545 scientific articles, of which young staff contributed 145 articles. Thus, young staff contributed about 25%-30% of domestic publications each year.
Regarding international publications, in 2015, the School recorded that out of 47 international articles, 5 were authored by young staff. In 2016, there were 42 international publications, including 4 young staff. In 2017, there were 56 international publications and the number of young staff authors increased to 7. The number of international publications by young staff accounts for 10%-13% of the total number of articles in the whole school.
Considering that the above figures are not commensurate with the potential of the young staff, the Principal suggested that teachers need to show initiative, have a spirit of adventure and set higher goals for themselves.
In response to concerns from young staff about the difficulties in international publication for the fields of social sciences and humanities, Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan (Vice Principal) affirmed: international publication is not as difficult as people think. However, young staff should not expect too much from training courses or wait for support policies from the school. Their own efforts are the most important. Each person needs to be aware that international publication is a mandatory and necessary requirement for researchers to improve their own capacity towards integration with the world scientific community. This is a condition for survival and an inevitable trend.

On the School’s side, Vice Principal Hoang Anh Tuan also proposed: to help young staff overcome barriers, to make breakthroughs in scientific research and international publication, the School must have specific support policies, from improving English proficiency, standardizing English to supporting young staff to attend international conferences, realizing good research ideas. Young staff with good achievements in international publication need to be commended, recognized and given special rewards compared to other subjects.
The future development of the School depends largely on the human factor, so investment in human resources needs to be a top priority and have a long-term strategy, including accepting initial but necessary investments.
Affirming that the young generation now faces more competitive pressure than before, with increasingly higher demands in work and goals in life, Vice Principal Hoang Anh Tuan also said that new opportunities are opening up more and more. Whether or not they can grasp them to succeed depends largely on the will and initiative of young people.
At the end of the meeting, Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh emphasized: The school hopes and expects that the young staff will be proactive, actively participate and make important marks in the research and training activities of the school in the coming time. As long as the teachers have good scientific ideas and especially have the ability to publish in foreign journals, the school is ready to support and invest initial funding.
In addition, the Principal suggested that meetings should be periodically held between young staff and the Board of Directors to directly listen to the thoughts and concerns of teachers, from which the School will adjust support policies promptly and effectively.
At the meeting, the young staff also frankly shared the difficulties they encountered, and affirmed that they will always strive to improve and develop their own capacity, worthy of the tradition and brand of a leading university in Social Sciences and Humanities in Vietnam.
