Launch of Dinh Xuan Lam History Foundation

Professor, People's Teacher Dinh Xuan Lam (1925-2017) was born in Huong Son, Ha Tinh. He was a talented teacher and scientist, belonging to the generation that laid the foundation for the construction of Vietnamese revolutionary history. He is known as one of the legendary "four pillars" of the Faculty of History, Hanoi National University, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU.

During more than 60 years of research, Professor Dinh Xuan Lam has completed and published more than 400 scientific works in the form of textbooks, reference books, and scientific articles of many genres and in many different fields, from history to literature and national culture. However, his main contributions are in the field of research on Vietnamese history, especially modern and contemporary Vietnamese history. Professor Dinh Xuan Lam is also an exemplary teacher, loved and respected by generations of students for his virtue and personality in lifestyle. Generations of colleagues and students in the History field always remember his words expressing his love and burning passion for the teaching profession: "If there is an afterlife and I could choose the profession again, I would still choose to be a teacher."

Present at the Fund's launching ceremony were many colleagues and students of History from the Institute of History, the Institute of Party History, the Institute of Military History, the Ho Chi Minh Museum, and universities: Hanoi National University of Education, University of Education - VNU, Hong Duc University, Vinh University, Ha Tinh University, Hue University of Education, Hue University of Sciences, etc.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh - Head of the Executive Board of the Dinh Xuan Lam History Fund, Term I (2017-2022) - shared the purpose and establishment of the Dinh Xuan Lam History Fund: To commemorate and honor, and at the same time create conditions for generations of students, trainees, and postgraduates to continue studying, continue the career and multiply the historical achievements of Prof. People's Teacher Dinh Xuan Lam, after his death, many colleagues, generations of students and his family discussed and agreed on a plan to establish a History Fund named after Dinh Xuan Lam. This plan was supported by the leaders of the Faculty of History and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, who created conditions for the Fund to operate.

Unlike other scholarship funds, the Dinh Xuan Lam History Fund is awarded to students, graduate students and postgraduates in History, with priority given to those researching topics related to the period of modern Vietnamese history in training institutions from Hue, Ha Tinh, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa and Hanoi. The criteria for the award are: students with excellent academic performance and above and scientific research awards; graduate students with excellent academic performance and above, excellent thesis defense results and scientific research achievements in the form of books or articles published in prestigious scientific journals at home and abroad; PhD students with excellent thesis defense results and published works in prestigious national and international publishing houses and journals.

Professor Phan Huy Le shared some touching words about his colleague: The launching ceremony of the Fund falls on the birthday of Professor Dinh Xuan Lam, I cannot help but be moved because up to now, of the four names "Lam, Le, Tan, Vuong", Professor Vuong passed away the earliest in 2005, Professor Lam passed away in 2017, Professor Tan is very sick, and I am the only one left. What can I do, life is like that. But besides the emotion and loneliness, today witnessing the launching ceremony of the Dinh Xuan Lam History Fund made me very happy.

Professor Phan Huy Le said that when he was alive, Professor Dinh Xuan Lam once confided that he really wanted to have a History Fund named after him to commemorate his life of historical research. He was born, lived and worked in many rural areas, his hometown was Ha Tinh, grew up and studied in Hue, then taught in Thanh Hoa and lived in Hanoi. Therefore, he wanted to have an award for students who love History from training institutions from Hue and beyond.

Mr. Dinh Xuan Tho - son of Professor Dinh Xuan Lam and also the founder of the Fund, remembers his father and expresses gratitude for the love that his colleagues and students have for Professor Dinh Xuan Lam: Because I study and work far away, I do not have the opportunity to be close to my father much, but every time I ask: "Do you need anything, Dad?", the answer is always: "Dad, you don't need anything, your students take care of you a lot". Everyone's attention to Professor Dinh Xuan Lam is always dedicated and thoughtful, even in the smallest things in life. This is a simple happiness, but not everyone is honored to have it.

“My father did not strive for titles or value money in his entire life. The value and legacy he left behind cannot be measured, but only a burning desire to spread the values ​​of historical research to future generations of students. I hope that the young people who receive the award today can promote the knowledge and values ​​of scientific research in the field of History to contribute to our society and life,” Mr. Dinh Xuan Tho shared.
