General Journalism

From its early days, the Faculty of Journalism has gathered a dedicated and enthusiastic team of lecturers, many of whom are prominent and reputable scientists such as Professor Ha Minh Duc, Associate Professor Duong Xuan Son, Associate Professor Dinh Van Huong, Associate Professor Do Xuan Ha, Associate Professor Vu Quang Hao, Doctor Doan Huong, Associate Professor Nguyen Thi Minh Thai, etc.

That team possessed both the profound depth of a generation of scientists whose prestige and reputation had soared in the field of theoretical criticism, and the flamboyant, romantic quality that had become the trademark of "General Professors." They also had the qualities of journalism: quick-witted, incisive, highly combative, and possessing critical thinking skills. Furthermore, they were all masters of language, so that every time the professors lectured, the students listened as if mesmerized…

Continuing the legacy of previous generations, the Institute's current faculty largely consists of young, dynamic, and enthusiastic staff. 100% of the faculty hold Master's degrees or higher, 35% are Associate Professors, and over 60% hold PhDs. Many staff members received formal training in the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Korea, Russia, and other countries, and are reputable experts in the fields of academia and media research.

In addition, the Institute has more than 50 part-time lecturers who are experts in journalism, media management, and veteran journalists, including Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen The Ky, Director General of Vietnam Radio and Television Station, and Dr. Ta Bich Loan, Head of VTV3 Department of Vietnam Television Station, both of whom also serve as heads of departments.

In Vietnam's leading training and research environment for social sciences and humanities, students at the Institute have access to and are imparted the most fundamental, foundational, and in-depth knowledge of social sciences and humanities disciplines. This important and valuable knowledge base helps future journalists create articles that resonate with readers, possessing cultural depth and a comprehensive understanding of society.

The state-invested equipment system, totaling nearly 60 billion VND, enables students and trainees of the Institute to study and work in a fundamentally modern and comprehensive journalistic environment, among the best in current journalism and media training institutions.

From this school, more than 10,000 graduates, masters, and doctoral degree holders in journalism have spread throughout the country, working and contributing to the rapid flow of news, creating a seamless information stream in society, connecting information between the Party, the Government, and the people, and between businesses and the public. Many alumni are journalists who are always on the front lines during critical moments of storms, floods, and natural disasters; many are leading writers in the fight against corruption and negative practices; hundreds of alumni have received national journalism awards and journalism awards from various sectors and levels... Many alumni have held and are currently holding key positions in the national press and media system.

Adapting to conquer new media spaces.

In the context of the media boom, teaching about new media, convergent and multimedia media, social media, and the development of modern journalism is an important part of the curriculum at the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training, with innovative modules such as:Mobile journalism, Data journalism, Content organization and creation of journalistic masterpieces, Reporting in emergency situations.... and other specialized fields of journalism.

The admissions for Journalism, Advanced Journalism, and Public Relations programs consistently rank among the top three in terms of student enrollment, and for many years, the Institute has led the entire university in postgraduate admissions.

Interacting and exchanging ideas with international press and renowned journalism training institutions worldwide, drawing on the experience of foreign media to develop high-quality training programs, in-depth research projects, and propose recommendations and policy advice for leadership and management agencies is a key focus of the Institute. Over the past five years, the Institute has carried out three state-level research projects and, most recently, a national-level key task on researching and developing a National Geographic Encyclopedia with a Media Volume. In addition, the Institute regularly organizes numerous domestic and international scientific conferences, attracting the participation of hundreds of Vietnamese and foreign scientists…

The profound lessons that have led to the Institute's success today are the spirit of solidarity and close ties between generations of teachers and students, the dedication and responsibility of the faculty and staff, the diligent and serious study and the dynamic and creative spirit of the students, trainees, and doctoral candidates, along with the cooperation and assistance of press agencies, press management agencies, and domestic and international partners. Above all, it is the correct direction, the close attention and guidance, and the immense trust that the leaders of Vietnam National University, Hanoi and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities have bestowed upon the teachers and students of the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training.

Journalism possesses extraordinary power. It's not just a profession, but a mission, because journalism doesn't exist for itself, but for society.

In the context of the explosion of social media, with the trend of convergent and multimedia communication, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and the Internet of Things, the humanistic value of connecting hearts is increasingly emphasized. Dynamic, creative, honest, and humanistic journalism and media is the overarching theme passed down through generations of journalism teachers and students at the University of Humanities. Accordingly, journalism and media training should not only focus on developing skills and operational techniques, but also provide comprehensive training, especially in political ideology and professional ethics, general knowledge of culture and society for journalists, and at the same time, journalists must understand the core values and orientation for the future development model of Vietnamese journalism and media.

In 2018, based on the integration of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication and the Center for Journalism and Communication Professional Training, the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training was established, marking a milestone as a pioneering unit in the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, developing from a faculty to an institute, preparing the groundwork for future university autonomy.

The Institute of Journalism and Communication Training is one of only two training institutions in Vietnam that offers programs from bachelor's to doctoral degrees in Journalism.

In addition to the standard program, the Institute offers high-quality Bachelor of Journalism and Bachelor of Public Relations programs.

In addition to the research-oriented Master of Journalism program, the Institute has developed application-oriented Master of Journalism programs, and especially the Master of Media Management program (enrollment started in 2020).
