In 1992, in response to the demands of the country's renovation in general and the need for high-quality tourism human resources in particular, the major of Tourism Geography was opened at Hanoi National University. On October 21, 1995, immediately after the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi was established, the Director of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi signed a decision to establish the Faculty of Tourism Studies. Located in a research university, the Faculty of Tourism Studies defines its mission as being at the forefront of creating, disseminating knowledge and training high-quality human resources in tourism, serving the cause of national construction and development.

Inheriting the academic tradition of the University, with the pioneering and active contributions of famous scholars such as the late Professor Tran Quoc Vuong, the late Professor Hoang Thieu Son, Professor Dr. Nguyen Minh Thuyet, the late Associate Professor Dr. Dinh Trung Kien, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Duc Thanh and many other scholars..., after the initial years of overcoming difficulties, the Faculty of Tourism Studies has quickly become a reliable address for training and scientific research on tourism in Hanoi as well as nationwide.

Currently, the Faculty of Tourism Studies consists of 3 departments: Tourism Culture and Geography, Tourism Management, and Event Management. The entire faculty has 18 staff, including 2 specialists, 15 lecturers, 1 guest lecturer, the proportion of staff who are main lecturers is 37.5%, the proportion of staff with doctoral degrees is 50%, the proportion of staff with associate professor titles is 27.5%.

In order to fulfill the mission of becoming a high-quality and high-level training and scientific research institution in tourism, since its inception, the Faculty has focused on research-oriented training. The models of regular bachelor's training, work-study, dual degrees, and master's degrees have been successfully piloted. Currently, the Faculty's training programs are complete from bachelor's to doctoral levels, including two bachelor's training programs: Tourism and Travel Services Management (with two majors: Travel Management and Event Management) and Hotel Management, one master's training program and one doctoral training program, all of which are oriented towards research in the field of Tourism. In addition, the Faculty also has dual degree training programs and short-term training programs... The Faculty of Tourism Studies is the first unit in the country to train master's degrees in tourism (in 2003) and doctorate degrees in tourism (in 2018). After 25 years of efforts, with more than 4,000 full-time students, more than 500 graduate students and thousands of students in part-time, dual degree, and short-term programs, the Faculty has been systematically trained to meet the human resource requirements for Vietnam's tourism, gradually filling the gap between scientific knowledge and practical experience and knowledge, improving the competitiveness of the industry's workforce. Many students and trainees of the Faculty have graduated and held important positions in state management agencies, research institutes, universities, and businesses... across the country.

The scientific research activities of the Faculty of Tourism Studies have also been constantly developing in both quantity and quality. Up to now, the Faculty's staff have had about 1,000 scientific works published in scientific journals and conference proceedings at home and abroad. From mainly publishing domestic works, many staff have now had scientific articles published internationally. The Faculty's staff have published more than 50 textbooks, lectures and monographs; chaired more than 30 scientific topics at all levels (including 12 topics at the National University level, 17 topics at the school level, 2 topics at the city level...). Every year, the Faculty organizes conferences, scientific seminars for staff as well as students, domestic and international scientific seminars in the field of tourism. In December 2019, within the framework of the TOURIST Project, the Faculty successfully organized the international conference "Sustainable tourism development: Lessons for Southeast Asian countries". These are concrete evidences of the efforts and scientific research capacity of the Faculty's staff, thereby affirming the Faculty's strengths and position in tourism scientific research in Vietnam.

In order to continuously improve the quality of training and scientific research according to international standards, the Faculty of Tourism Studies has established cooperative relationships with dozens of universities and international organizations such as Toulouse Le Mirail University (France); Rikkyo University, Kumamoto University, Nagoya City University (Japan); University of Missouri (USA); School of Tourism of Munich University of Applied Sciences, Greifswald University (Germany); Chiang Mai University (Thailand); Taylor University (Malaysia); Kent University, Leeds University (UK); Queensland University, TAFE University (Australia); Guangxi University, Honghe University (China) ... thereby exchanging staff and students in the Faculty to study and receive many international scholars and students. With these efforts, the Faculty of Tourism Studies not only demonstrates its core position in tourism training and scientific research in the country, but also contributes to gradually raising the academic reputation of tourism training and scientific research in Vietnam to the regional and world level.

With the achievements in training and scientific research, the staff and individual teachers of the Faculty of Tourism Studies have received many certificates of merit from the Prime Minister, Hanoi National University, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Hanoi People's Committee, General Department of Tourism, University of Social Sciences and Humanities...

The Faculty of Tourism Studies always provides development orientations to overcome existing limitations and shortcomings such as: raising awareness of the staff - lecturers, researchers, graduate students, and students about the leading mission in creating and disseminating knowledge; improving scientific research capacity, aiming for international publications with high impact index; improving facilities and documentation system; promoting cooperation with training and research institutions, organizations, businesses, and individuals at home and abroad; perfecting and supplementing practical knowledge into the system of lectures and textbooks; implementing activities to assess the quality of training programs and scientific research of the Faculty.

Over the past 25 years, with the right development goals, the Faculty of Tourism Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (along with many other training institutions in the country) has gradually implemented human resource training at many levels for the Vietnam Tourism industry. Up to now, despite many achievements in training and affirming its position, the Faculty of Tourism Studies has always strived with the desire to provide high-quality human resources for the country's tourism industry, striving to gradually appear on the map of training and scientific research in tourism and hotels in the region and the world.

Entering a new stage of development with many opportunities and challenges awaiting, the leadership, staff, lecturers, graduate students and students of the Faculty of Tourism Studies will be determined and make every effort to develop the Faculty of Tourism Studies quickly, sustainably and comprehensively in a creative and integrated direction, contributing positively to the development of the country, reaching the level of advanced universities in the region and the world.
