The Veterans Association of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was established on December 22, 2001. Over the years, the Association has participated in numerous activities of the University and Veterans Associations at all levels, consistently excelling in its duties and receiving the Hanoi City Veterans Association's ranking as an outstanding unit in emulation campaigns. One of the Association's core priorities is the education of the younger generation.
Traditional education about the nation and country in conjunction with major events. On the anniversaries of April 30th, May 7th, and December 22nd each year, the Veterans Association of the University, in coordination with the Youth Union and the Student Association, regularly organizes meetings and exchanges with historical witnesses. Typical examples include an exchange with veterans who participated in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign on the 50th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory; two exhibitions on "Images and artifacts about the struggle of former soldiers imprisoned by the enemy at Phu Quoc Prison" and exchanges with over 80 former Phu Quoc prisoners (2005, 2009); a successful exchange night titled "A Time of Fiery Flowers" in collaboration with Vietnam Television; exchanges with witnesses who protected President Ho Chi Minh and the Director of the Ho Chi Minh Museum during the "Learning and Following the Moral Example of Ho Chi Minh" campaign; and exchanges with former teachers and students of the university who participated in the resistance against the US. The association has held exchanges with military writers who participated in the resistance war against the US... These meetings and exchanges have contributed to educating patriotism and national pride among the school's young generation and have been highly appreciated by teachers and students. The association has regularly coordinated with the Youth Union and the Student Association to effectively educate the younger generation on patriotism and revolutionary traditions. Many teachers have not only taught well but also provided dedicated assistance and guidance to students in scientific research and in various aspects of their spiritual lives. On the occasion of Vietnam Disabled Persons Day, April 20, 2010, the Veterans Association of the School organized a meeting and exchange with the Hoa Da Club (the school's disabled student club) with the participation of representatives from the school leadership and many members of the Hanoi Disabled Student Association and the Thanh Tri District Disabled Persons Association, with the theme "Overcoming Oneself" to encourage disabled students to strive to excel in their training and studies. During the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, the Association also coordinated with the Faculty of Journalism and Communication of the university to organize a meeting and exchange with a delegation of American veterans, contributing to strengthening understanding between veterans of both sides and educating students about the great sacrifices of our people and nation in the struggle for and protection of national independence. For many years, the university has had no students disciplined for social vices, no social vices infiltrating the school, and no children of veterans involved in social vices. On the anniversaries of the victory on April 30th, the War Invalids and Martyrs Day on July 27th, and the founding day of the Army on December 22nd, the branches also organized many diverse activities to educate students about patriotism and the heroic traditions of their forefathers, such as inviting historical witnesses, veteran teachers, and military artists to interact and talk with students.
Spreading pride in the school's traditions. The predecessor institution of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi was the Faculty of Literature, Hanoi (established by Decree No. 45 signed by President Ho Chi Minh on October 10, 1945). For over sixty years of development, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has consistently been recognized by the Party, State, and society as the largest center for training and research in social sciences and humanities in the country, tasked with training highly qualified basic science personnel to serve the cause of national construction and defense. The University's achievements in training and research are demonstrated through the following accolades: First-Class Labor Medal (1981), First-Class Independence Medal (2001), Hero of Labor during the Renovation Period (2005), Ho Chi Minh Medal (2010); 10 teachers awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize and 16 teachers awarded the State Prize for science and technology. 25 teachers were awarded the title of People's Teacher and 56 teachers were awarded the title of Excellent Teacher. These achievements serve as a foundation for the Association to educate students of the University about its traditions.
Two stanzas were chosen to introduce the ancient citadel of Quang Tri, composed by journalist Pham Dinh Lan, Vice Chairman of the Veterans Association of the University: "Walk softly and speak quietly, so that my comrades may rest peacefully beneath the grass. The sky of Quang Tri is clear and windy, even if it is noisy, do not shake the trees. Walk softly and speak quietly, the citadel is vast, yet my comrades lie crowded together. Every inch of land holds a real life, making me come here today with a lump in my throat."
The University of Social Sciences and Humanities has trained great national politicians such as Professor Dr. Nguyen Phu Trong, Hanoi Party Secretary Pham Quang Nghi, leading national scientists such as Tran Van Giau, Tran Duc Thao, and martyred poets and writers Le Anh Xuan, Nguyen Trong Dinh, etc. These are exemplary role models for the Veterans Association to educate the students about traditions. More specifically, the veteran teachers currently working at the University are all role models for the students to follow. Since its establishment, the University's Veterans Association has had 14 members defend doctoral dissertations, 4 members awarded the title of Excellent Teacher, 2 members appointed as Professors, and 27 members appointed as Associate Professors. The exemplary dedication of the teachers has served as vivid lessons for educating the students... Every year, the School's Veterans Association organizes "back to the roots," "revisiting old battlefields" to reminisce about old memories, nurture emotions, and remind each other to live better and more fully in each moment. From these trips, many valuable poems, songs, essays, short stories... have been composed by the veterans of the Association and published in various mass media outlets - as the most refined emotions and most genuine reflections, conveying messages to today's young generation.
