Before each exam season, students are always stressed about choosing a major. The biggest worry is how to choose a major that suits their abilities and leads to a successful career after graduation – a difficult task for many. Currently, due to following the crowd and chasing after supposedly "hot" majors, many students still have concerns about choosing social sciences and humanities majors, such as: not knowing what they will study and what they will be able to do after graduation…

Reasons for choosing social sciences and humanities

Each student has their own reasons for choosing a particular major. When asked why they chose social sciences and humanities, some students said they chose them because it's a continuous process – Nguyen Thuy Dung (K55 Social Work major): I studied social sciences in high school, so when I applied to university, I decided to take the C block exam for the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Some students chose humanities because of their interests and passions, Tran Viet Cuong (K52 Literature major): I chose to study humanities because I had a pre-existing intention. This choice wasn't forced by my parents or anyone else, but mainly because of my passion. And I decided to choose the University of Social Sciences and Humanities because the school has a broader training system. Nguyen Thoan (K51 Literature) explained her reason for choosing a major in social sciences and humanities after careful research and consultation: "Since I was little, I've loved literature. When I entered high school and was planning for university entrance exams, I decided to choose the Literature department at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. During high school, my teachers also talked about the University of Social Sciences and Humanities as a leading institution for training full-time students, which greatly influenced my future career path." It can be said that each student has different reasons for choosing to study social sciences and humanities.

More opportunities - more choices

Regarding study opportunities in social sciences and humanities, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Tourism Studies, stated: Besides traditional, long-standing basic social sciences and humanities disciplines such as Literature, History, and Philosophy, there are also several new, applied, and practical fields: Journalism, Tourism, Sociology, and Vietnamese Studies… Therefore, candidates have increasingly more choices in social sciences and humanities. Since the 2009-2010 academic year, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has been recruiting students from Group A for 10 majors. Opportunities to study social sciences and humanities have become more widely available. Nguyen Thi Thu Hien (K55 Psychology) shared: "I studied in Group A but I really like Psychology. Last year, I learned that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was recruiting students from Group A, and thanks to that, I had the opportunity to fulfill my dream." I will try my best to study well so that I can enroll in clinical psychology classes and then possibly pursue a master's degree... Along with that, the learning process at the School always helps students acquire important foundational knowledge. Nhiep Van Thien (K51 Oriental Studies): In my opinion, the greatest thing the School has equipped each student with is methodology, problem-solving skills, and a good cultural background. This can be understood as a way, a skill, that allows us to know where to start and how to view a social issue when we encounter it.

Career prospects

What can you do with a degree in social sciences and humanities? Where can you work, and how? These are questions that not only social science and humanities students but also students from many other fields often worry about. Many graduates from social sciences and humanities have achieved success in various fields. These may be jobs directly related to their specialization, or sometimes in other professions, but the knowledge of social sciences and humanities acquired always provides a solid foundation and a valuable asset for building a long-term career. Nguyen Tien Khanh (K51 Tourism Studies), currently a project director at a company and a consultant on communication and brand development for the Majestic Hotel and Ham Rong Resort, said: "My four years studying at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities helped me develop logical thinking, critical thinking, communication skills, and relationship building – all of which are extremely important in my current job." Some skills in marketing, diplomatic protocol, etc., learned at school have also helped me in building human resources, communication, and promoting the image of the company, events, and myself in today's media environment. In my opinion, job opportunities for students in social sciences are immense, and these opportunities are created by oneself. Students should strive not only to excel in their studies but also to participate in many social activities and immerse themselves in the environment of their intended workplace. MSc. Tran Bach Hieu (K48 - International Studies), currently a lecturer in the Department of Political Science, shared: Previously, I majored in mathematics, but I chose to take the D-block exam for the Faculty of International Studies. During my studies at the university until graduation, I worked in many different fields: television editor, project business officer, PR, journalism… The advantage of students in social sciences and humanities is that they are trained with a strong foundation of knowledge, therefore, graduates have many options. There is no shortage of job opportunities today, and if students are proactive, it won't be too difficult for them to find a suitable job. Furthermore, many other career opportunities await those with degrees in social sciences and humanities...

6 types of university training programs

Currently, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities offers six types of undergraduate programs, giving students a wide range of choices and opportunities to study multiple majors and universities within the Vietnam National University, Hanoi: - Standard full-time programs with 120 to 140 credits, aiming to meet national quality standards. - High-quality full-time programs with 150 to 155 credits. These programs are for high-achieving students in basic science majors, employing advanced teaching and learning methods and offering high priority in terms of teaching and learning conditions and scholarships, aiming to meet regional quality standards. - International-level programs with approximately 160-170 credits. These programs are developed based on references to the corresponding programs of foreign universities ranked among the top 200 universities in the world. This program is taught by leading Vietnamese lecturers and lecturers from partner universities abroad. Students receive investment in English language training to meet international standards and benefit from generous scholarships and modern learning facilities. - Dual degree programs, linking different majors within the university (e.g., Literature – Journalism, Tourism – Management Science…) or between the university’s majors and other units within the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (e.g., Tourism – Foreign Languages, International Studies – Foreign Languages...). With this type of program, students can receive two full-time bachelor's degrees in a maximum of six years and save on tuition costs because courses in the first major that are similar or equivalent to the second major will have their results preserved. - A major-minor program is a program built on the core curriculum of a major, such as a standard full-time program, but with additional knowledge from another major (maximum 29 credits) to provide students with better access to the job market and the ability to continue studying a new major. For example: Students majoring in Information and Library Science with a minor in Management Science will receive a Bachelor of Information and Library Science degree with a transcript showing the academic results of this major along with the academic results of the subjects in the minor, Management Science. - An international joint program is a program built on the curriculum of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities or a foreign university, and the degree is awarded by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities or the partner university. This program is implemented using the 2+2 method, meaning the first two years are studied in Vietnam and the remaining time is studied at a foreign university, or vice versa. These training programs must all meet the quality standards agreed upon by the two universities.
