Summary of the 2017 admissions process: "Temporarily satisfied, but not yet completely satisfied."

On the morning of November 14, 2017, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held a conference to summarize the 2017 university admissions work and outline the direction for 2018 admissions. Evaluating the implementation of this work over the past year, Vice Rector Hoang Anh Tuan stated: "We can be somewhat satisfied, but not yet complacent with what we have achieved."

At the conference, Vice Rector Hoang Anh Tuan expressed his gratitude to the teachers who directly participated in the 2017 admissions process, as well as the heads of departments and faculties – those who worked closely with the university to organize an effective and high-quality admissions season. Nearly 250 university staff members participated in the admissions process in various roles. All directions and strategies in the admissions process received high consensus and agreement from all participating staff.

Evaluating the past year's admissions process, Associate Professor Hoang Anh Tuan stated that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH) performed relatively well and effectively. With a completely new exam organization and question setting method, the 2017 National High School Graduation Examination created fundamental, scientific, and more effective changes in admissions, particularly by reducing stress for candidates and minimizing costs for society. The USSH seriously implemented its participation in organizing the National High School Graduation Examination, adhering strictly to the plans of the Ministry of Education and Training, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.

The 2017 university admissions season also witnessed many positive developments, demonstrating the efforts and creativity of the staff involved. The university promptly provided necessary and updated information on regular university admissions to candidates. Activities promoting the university's image and providing information about academic programs were carried out relatively well, both online and offline. Specifically, the Student Ambassador Program organized 192 student ambassadors (USSH students) to disseminate information on regular university admissions and provide counseling and support to candidates at 95 high schools in 15 provinces/cities in the northern region. Online counseling programs via the admissions website were conducted consistently from February to the end of August 2017, effectively and promptly supporting candidates during the regular university admissions application process. The school's staff involved in organizing the high school graduation exam coordinated well with local officials, ensuring the exam was conducted safely and in accordance with regulations, without any unfortunate incidents or errors. Thanks to the application of information technology, the admissions process was carried out openly, transparently, and accurately. The statistical data collection, updating of admissions data, and announcement of admissions results were also carried out quickly and according to the plan.

The 2017 admissions process is considered to have made more progress compared to 2015-2016, mainly due to the simplification of the examination method by the Ministry of Education and Training, as well as the close guidance and attention of the school's leadership. However, "we can only be temporarily satisfied, not completely satisfied with what we have achieved," said Vice Principal Hoang Anh Tuan.

Alongside the positive results, the existing problems in the past academic year's admissions process were frankly identified. The high school graduation exam lacked sufficient differentiation, while the priority points for eligible candidates and regions were excessively high, leading to many candidates with good scores failing to be admitted to their desired majors. The single admission score for all subject combinations in each major resulted in an imbalance in the proportion of admitted students across different combinations/exam blocks. Some majors with high foreign language requirements, such as Oriental Studies, Tourism and Travel Management, Hotel Management, and International Studies, had an excessively large number of candidates from Group C. The rate of "virtual admissions" was higher than predicted. The admissions process for high-quality training programs did not meet the set targets.

In the coming period, the school's leadership, along with departments and faculties, will plan to refine the 2018 admissions guidelines to make them more effective and overcome the shortcomings that existed in the 2017 admissions process.

According to the summary report, in the 2017 academic year's admissions, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities achieved its undergraduate enrollment target of 102.98% with 1610 students. It is expected that the number of students admitted to the undergraduate program will increase in 2018, when the University adds a new major: Southeast Asian Studies.
