Discuss and propose key solutions to innovate scientific research activities of students at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities

In his opening speech, Associate Professor Dr. Dao Thanh Truong presented a number of main contents: giving comments on the draft plan to organize the school-level student scientific research conference, sharing the results of scientific research of the faculty's students in 2022 and contributing consulting opinions to innovate students' scientific research work, improve the quality of research, link students' scientific research with international publications, improve the quality of training, and through scientific research increase job opportunities after graduation.

The representative of the Science Management Department presented some contents about the plan to organize the school-level Student Conference: the conference is expected to be held in May, all reports that won first prize at the faculty level will be reported directly at the conference, the authors of the reports that won second and third prizes will attend. It is requested that the leaders of the Faculty in charge of scientific research review and finalize full information about the authors of the reports that won prizes.

Representatives of the Faculties and Departments contributed many opinions, focusing on a number of issues: in the past one or two years, the number of students participating in scientific reports was not as large as in previous years. The objective reason could be due to the epidemic, but the main reason was that the organization time was too short, not enough for students to prepare a scientific work; the benefits that they will have when doing scientific research are not really attractive to students.

Therefore, representatives of the faculties also proposed some solutions: The organization plan should start early (can be implemented from October so that students have at least 5-6 months to prepare a serious, quality research), it is possible to adjust the regulations on the use of funding because currently every year the faculties still return excess funding while the remuneration for students and staff participating is very limited in funding. That funding should be adjusted not only for the annual Student Scientific Conference but should be used for scientific research activities in general so that the Faculty will be proactive in planning and have funding to implement many other research activities of students during the school year.

Regarding the funding level for a student report, it is still quite limited and not encouraging. Faculty representatives also proposed that there should be other forms to increase encouragement: Expanding scientific research exchange activities with universities in other countries, giving students the opportunity to exchange and practice abroad; supporting students to publish in school journals, or domestic journals to continue to prepare their graduate and doctoral applications, and have the opportunity to apply for scholarships to study abroad. There should also be communication sessions so that students understand that student scientific research is a practice with detailed guidance from teachers and research experts on research orientation and methods. That is extremely important knowledge for students themselves in their future studies and work. It is also necessary to add more awards for consolation prizes.

Based on listening to all the opinions exchanged by representatives of Faculties and departments, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Thanh Truong concluded: First of all, on behalf of the School's Board of Directors, I would like to thank the leaders and scientific assistants of the Faculties and departments for their very accurate and specific comments on many issues: timing and roadmap for implementing student scientific conferences at all levels, support policies to encourage and attract students to participate, and criteria for scoring research. The Department of Scientific Management has fully recorded and carefully studied all opinions to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that student scientific research activities in 2022 and the following years are effectively implemented. Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Thanh Truong also affirmed: regarding the time, it is necessary to have an early announcement from October and to implement the faculty-level student conference in March, to avoid the situation where many students drop out halfway after registering because the preparation time is too urgent; add more funding for consolation prizes; Cash prizes can be awarded at the conference to increase motivation; student scientific research should follow the trend to encourage and attract a large number of students to participate, but there must also be individualized investment for high-quality research; scientific research activities should be linked with domestic and international publishing and publication.
