Introduction to the seminar

For a long time, the involvement of Indochinese workers and soldiers in World War I was overshadowed or relegated to larger issues (the contributions of colonial empires to World War I, particularly African troops, the issue of race and colonialism, postcolonialism). Although this involvement could have been the subject of significant historical revisions, no Franco-Vietnamese scientific event has ever been entirely dedicated to this topic.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, the seminar was organized with the ambition of:

  • Reviewing the involvement of soldiers and "Indochinese" laborers in the war offers a new perspective.
  • Introducing Vietnamese historical and literary works about World War I, or published during that period.
  • Exchange of Franco-Vietnamese perspectives on history and literature.
  • We encourage future bilateral and inter-sectoral cooperation.

This workshop is aimed at the general public as well as academics, students and researchers, and will proceed in the following order:

  • Presentations by French and Vietnamese researchers: (approximately 20 minutes per speaker).
    • Professor H. Eckert (History and Sociology, ESPE Martinique): Indochinese people joined the French army.

    • Professor Tran Hinh: Memories of World War I in Vietnamese Literature.
    • Dr. Pham Quang Minh: program host
  • Interaction with the public (30 minutes).
  • Final part (30 minutes): Interview by P. Journoud with L. Campa about the work "Colombe sous la lune" (literally: "Colombe under the moonlight") (novel, Stock Publishers, 2017).
