Introduction to the panel discussion
For a long time, the participation of "Indochinese" workers and soldiers in the First World War was overshadowed by other conflicts (the Second World War, the wars of decolonization - Indochina, Vietnam, Algeria) or subsumed into larger issues (the contribution of colonial empires to the First World War, especially African troops, the question of race and colonization, postcolonialism). Although this participation could have become the target of many important historical revisions, there has never been a French-Vietnamese scientific event devoted entirely to this topic.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, the conference was organized with the ambition to:
- Reviewing the participation of soldiers and "Indochinese" workers in the war, thereby providing a new perspective.
- Introduce Vietnamese historical and literary works written about World War I or published during that period.
- Exchange of French-Vietnamese views on history and literature.
- Encourage future bilateral and interdisciplinary cooperation.
The conference is aimed at the general public as well as academics, students and researchers, and follows the following sequence:
- Speeches by French and Vietnamese researchers: (about 20 minutes per speaker).
- Prof. H. Eckert (History and Sociology, ESPE Martinique): Indochinese people joined the French army.
- Professor P. Journoud (History, Paul-Valéry University Montpellier 3): President Ho Chi Minh.
- Professor L. Campa (Literature, University of Paris Nanterre): Indochinese people in French literature during the First World War.
- Professor Tran Hinh: Memories of World War I in Vietnamese literature.
- Dr. Pham Quang Minh: host
- Public speaking (30 minutes).
- Final part (30 minutes): P. Journoud's interview with L. Campa about the work "Colombe sous la lune" (tentative translation: "Colombe under the moonlight") (novel, Stock Publishing House, 2017).
