At 7:00 AM on June 5th, 2010, the campus of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was bustling with the graceful figures of students in traditional Vietnamese ao dai dresses defending their graduation theses. By the afternoon of the same day, students from the Sociology, Linguistics, and Philosophy departments had completed their graduation thesis defenses.
* Department of SociologyThe graduation thesis defense began on June 3rd, 2010, with the Sociology department (48 students) starting, followed by the Social Work department (45 students) on June 5th, 2010. According to the professors on the examination board, the quality of the theses this year was significantly better than last year. For the Sociology department, the thesis topics were very diverse and focused on current and pressing social issues, reflecting the students' concern for the dynamics of life. The research methods were also well-applied and appropriate to the research objectives of the topics. For the Social Work department, the students showed interest in social work models related to organizations, centers, and communities that help and support vulnerable people and those in particularly difficult circumstances. By applying social research methods, individual social work, group social work, and community social work, students demonstrated a deep understanding of social issues. Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Hoa, Head of the Sociology Department, stated: "This year's graduation theses show remarkable progress among students, not only in choosing and executing their topics but also in presentation. The theses were beautifully presented, featuring numerous color photos and illustrative charts. The thesis layouts were logical, the writing style clear and coherent, and the slides were meticulously crafted and scientifically sound. Furthermore, students presented their theses with great confidence, demonstrating a solid foundation of knowledge. Although there were some minor errors in spelling and bibliography, these were negligible. As a result, students from both majors in the Sociology Department achieved thesis scores of 9 or higher." Among them, 9 theses received a perfect score of 10 (6 in Social Work and 3 in Sociology), and notably, one student defended their thesis in English. * Also on June 5, 2010,Department of LinguisticsThe department organized graduation thesis defenses for 57 students. According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Con (Head of the Department), due to the department's orientation, students in the department have been encouraged to participate in scientific research activities since their second and third years. This is considered a stepping stone to help students become familiar with research work and find materials to successfully complete their graduation theses today. The topics defended this year were very diverse; in addition to theoretical linguistic topics, there were many topics belonging to applied linguistics: journalistic language, advertising and communication language, etc. The scientific quality of the theses was evaluated quite highly. Three students achieved a perfect score of 10: student Nguyen Thi Van Anh with the thesis "Initial survey of Vietnamese advertising language from a marketing perspective (based on consumer goods advertising materials)"; Student Nguyen Thi Thu Thao's topic is "Sentences containing the focal particles 'even, also, only' in English and their corresponding forms in Vietnamese"; student Dinh Thi Hang's topic is "A survey of the Tay language in Tu Doan commune, Loc Binh district, Lang Son province".* Department of PhilosophyWith 42 students defending their graduation theses, including 39 students from cohort K51 (QH-2006-X) and 3 students from cohort K52 (QH-2007-X) who completed their studies ahead of schedule, the results show that cohort K51 was the first to adopt the credit-based training system, resulting in significant changes in the students' graduation outcomes. Among this year's graduates, one student achieved an excellent grade, one received an average grade, and the rest achieved good or excellent grades. The percentage of students with good or excellent grades is the highest among all regular cohorts of the Faculty to date. Seven students received a perfect score of 10 on their thesis defenses, belonging to the following majors: Marxist-Leninist Philosophy, History of Philosophy, and Religion. These are the students: Dinh Thi Hong Vinh with the topic "Lenin's thought on agriculture in the new economic policy and its significance for the three-pronged agricultural policy in Vietnam"; Nguyen Thi Van Anh with the topic "The role of science and technology in the development of the knowledge economy in Vietnam today"; Nguyen Thi Thuy with the topic "Some basic ideas of Max Werber in the work *The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism*"; Bui Thi Thu Hien with the topic "C. Jung's view on the unconscious"; Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoan with the topic "The relationship between the State and the Catholic Church in Vietnam"; Dinh Thi Tuyet with the topic "Understanding the concept of ethics in the Gospels"; and Doan Thu Nguyet with the topic "Building ecological ethics - a factor ensuring the sustainable development of Vietnam".
