Department of Vietnamese Language and Literature: Vietnamese language training program for foreigners (short-term course)

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities organizes Vietnamese language training at the basic, intermediate, and advanced levels for foreigners to meet the demand for human resources capable of using Vietnamese to serve Vietnamese language research and training centers, foreign diplomatic agencies, international organizations, and investment offices in Vietnam. Short-term Vietnamese language training at these levels also helps foreigners to pursue bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees at Vietnamese universities and research institutes.

Training programs

Basic level
  • This course provides learners with basic knowledge of Vietnamese phonetics; teaches learners how to pronounce Vietnamese according to the standard pronunciation of Hanoi speakers; and provides learners with simple sentence structure models, sentence patterns, and vocabulary used by Vietnamese people in daily life.
  • Equipping learners with professional skills related to the Vietnamese language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills at the basic level.
  • After completing the course, learners will be able to use Vietnamese effectively in daily communication, and read and write short essays in Vietnamese.
Intermediate level
  • This course provides learners with knowledge and skills in everyday Vietnamese communication, as well as communication in various specific environments; it offers learners longer and more challenging reading passages of different genres to expand their vocabulary; and it provides broad knowledge of Vietnamese grammar, including both lexical and syntactic aspects.
  • The program aims to develop listening and speaking skills in everyday Vietnamese communication and in various specific communication environments; equip learners with the ability to read and understand different types of Vietnamese texts, and write complex sentences and essays on various topics, ranging from easy to difficult and from simple to complex.
  • Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to understand everyday conversations and professional lectures in the classroom. They will be able to participate in discussions on issues related to their field of interest, read and understand various types of texts in their field, and use Vietnamese to write long essays on a variety of topics.
Advanced level
  • To provide learners with basic knowledge of the Vietnamese language: grammar, vocabulary, etc.; to provide students with knowledge of Vietnamese studies: history, economics, politics, literature, culture, etc., related to the life and traditional cultural activities of the Vietnamese people.
  • Equipping learners with professional skills related to the Vietnamese language: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language; providing skills in compiling various types of Vietnamese reference books: Vietnamese textbooks, Vietnamese dictionaries.
  • Upon completion of the course, learners can work in various fields: research and teaching Vietnamese at institutes, universities, and Vietnamese language training centers. They can also undertake Vietnamese-related jobs such as translation and interpretation at foreign embassies and news agencies both domestically and internationally. The program also ensures that learners have sufficient Vietnamese proficiency to understand lectures in various disciplines at Vietnamese universities.

Training organization format

Classes are organized in groups of 2 or more, or as private lessons with a teacher – one student, depending on the learner's needs. In addition to classes held during office hours from Monday to Friday in the classrooms of the Department of Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Studies (House B7 Bis, Tran Dai Nghia Street - Bach Khoa Ward - HanoiThe school may also organize after-hours classes at locations suggested by students.

Exams and certification

Once students accumulate the required number of credits, the school will organize exams in four subjects: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, categorized by level: beginner, intermediate, and advanced, to assess their proficiency. If the score in each subject is above 5 points and the student requests it, the school will issue a Vietnamese language certificate corresponding to the level achieved.
