The seminar was organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU and the Japanese Museum of Ethnology on September 10, 2008. The seminar brought together many leading historical experts from universities in Vietnam and Japan.
The seminar listened to and discussed three main presentations on: "The process of forming the nation and nationalism in Vietnamese history" (Professor Phan Huy Le), "The development of nationalism in modern Vietnam - new conditions, viewpoints and typical manifestations" (Associate Professor Pham Xanh) and "Nation from the cultural perspective of Vietnam in the late 19th and early 20th centuries" (Associate Professor Nguyen Hai Ke).
[img class="caption" src="images/stories/2008/9/12/img_7170.jpg" border="0" align="right" width="240"/>In the past and present, the issue of ethnicity and nationalism has received special attention from scientists around the world and is an issue that countries have exploited for the benefit of their own nation-states. However, the process of forming ethnicity and nationalism in each region and each country is not uniform due to the specific historical and cultural conditions. Starting from the basic concepts of ethnicity, nation, nationalism, patriotism, the papers have deeply analyzed the context of formation and manifestations of nationalism in Vietnam through historical periods. Thereby, the opinions discussed at the seminar have raised many theoretical and practical issues about the process of forming the nation-state in Vietnam and the region from a comparative perspective with the Asian region, specifically East Asian and Southeast Asian countries such as China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, etc.
