On the morning of November 17, 2011, within the framework of his state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Truong Tan Sang, Governor General of Canada David Lloyd Johnston visited the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and attended the "Multicultural" seminar at the University.Attending the seminar were Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh, Rector of the University, His Excellency Governor General David Johnston, Ms. Deborah Chatsis, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada to Vietnam, Mr. Perrin Beatty, President and CEO, Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Paul Davidson, President, Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, Mr. John R. McDougall, President, National Research Council of Canada, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Duc, Vice President of Vietnam National University, Hanoi and many officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education and Training and 300 students from the Faculty of International Studies, Faculty of Oriental Studies, Faculty of Journalism, Faculty of Tourism, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Diplomatic Academy, Hanoi University, University of Law and Canadian volunteer students working in Hoa Binh.

On behalf of the staff and students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh - Rector - expressed his honor to welcome Governor General David Johnston and other Canadian dignitaries to the University. The Rector emphasized: The visit of the Governor General of Canada to Vietnam and the University is a vivid manifestation of the good relationship between the Government and people of the two countries. As a leading training center in Vietnam, every year the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi sends hundreds of staff and students for scientific exchanges abroad and welcomes a similar number of foreign teachers and students to visit and work at the University. Especially in research and teaching programs, the University advocates expanding and strengthening cooperation with countries with strong educational development in order to study and learn from the experiences of countries around the world. For Canada, in addition to the Canadian Embassy in Vietnam, the University also has cooperative relations with many prestigious Canadian universities: University of Toronto, University of Monreal, University of Ottawa, Abitibi Temiscamin University... Through cooperation activities in training and science, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and Canadian partner schools actively contribute to building and developing the friendly relationship between the two countries in general, building and developing the American studies industry, including Canadian studies.

Governor General of Canada David Lloyd Johnston sincerely thanked the leaders, staff, scientists, lecturers and students of VNU for their warm welcome to him and his delegation. The Governor General of Canada said that he was very honored to be present at the leading university in Vietnam. For many years, Canada has had a good relationship with Vietnam in many different fields, especially culture and education. This can be seen through the close relationship between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and many Canadian universities. Mr. David Lloyd Johnston affirmed that with Canada's knowledge policy, cooperation between Vietnamese universities and Canadian universities through the Canadian Embassy in Vietnam will contribute to strengthening cooperation between the two countries and moving towards a better future.

The Governor General highly appreciated the Vietnamese community in Canada. He said: the Vietnamese community in Canada is very dynamic, Canada is the homeland of 250,000 Vietnamese Canadians, the Vietnamese community has contributed a lot to the socio-economic development of Canada. And Vietnam is also a country with a large number of students studying in Canada. On this occasion, to recognize the positive contributions to the friendly cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Canada, Governor General David Lloyd Johnston awarded medals to two individuals: Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Minh (Head of the Faculty of International Studies - University of Social Sciences and Humanities) and Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoi (former Vietnamese Ambassador to Canada for the term 2002 - 2006). In particular, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Minh is a scholar who participated in cooperation programs with the Canadian Embassy, invited universities in Vietnam to participate in research programs on Canada... and made special contributions to the cultural and educational relations between the two countries.
