University admissions in 2022: Many attractive policies create momentum for development.

Wednesday - August 10, 2022 12:55 PM
In 2022, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) continued to use the results of the high school graduation exam for university admissions. Simultaneously, it expanded the scale of the High School Student Assessment Exam (HSA) and allocated at least 20% of its admission quotas to this method for talent-based and high-quality programs with admission scores above 26 points. Notably, in the upcoming academic year, VNU will pilot a scholarship program for students in 18 basic science majors.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc- The Head of Training and the Deputy Head of the Admissions Steering Committee shared:aboutnew features inadmissionsregular university2022 of VNU Hanoi.

- Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc, could you please provide some basic information about the 2022 admissions plan of Vietnam National University, Hanoi?
Essentially, the admission methods of VNU remain stable as in 2021, based on the principle of ensuring the quality of incoming students, and we always consider this to be the top priority of VNU.
At the same time, in order to attract more talented candidates, improve the quality of input, and strengthen international integration, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) will expand the proportion of admissions based on the results of the competency assessment test, expand the scale of organizing VNU's competency assessment tests - allocating more quotas for this method of university admission in 2022.
It is projected that in 2022, Vietnam National University, Hanoi will have 13,150 enrollment quotas for 143 majors/training programs, including 8 new majors that meet the trends of the labor market and will begin organizing enrollment and training.
The admission methods are similar to those in 2021, including:
(1) Direct admission according to the Regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, the specific regulations in training at specialized high schools of VNU and the 2022 regular university admission guidelines of VNU;
(2) Admission of candidates with high school exam results in 2022 meeting the minimum quality assurance threshold set by VNU;
(3) Admission of candidates using the results of the National University of Hanoi's National Competency Assessment Exam in 2022 with a minimum score of 80/150 points or more (for some health-related majors: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, the minimum quality assurance threshold is 100 points) and in 2022, the National University of Hanoi will increase and allocate at least 20% of the quota to this method.

(i) Candidates with an international certificate from the Cambridge University Examination Centre, UK (referred to as A-Level certificate): Candidates using an A-Level certificate must have achieved a score of 60/100 or higher in each of the three subjects, including either Mathematics or Literature, according to the subject combinations specified for the respective training program (equivalent to grade C, PUM range ≥ 60).
(ii) Candidates with a score of 1100/1600 or higher on the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test, USA) standardized test. The registration code of Vietnam National University-Hanoi with the SAT testing organization (The College Board) is 7853-Vietnam National University-Hanoi
(iii) Candidates who achieve a score of 22/36 or higher on the ACT (American College Testing) standardized test.
(iv) Combined Admission: Candidates with an IELTS certificate of 5.5 or higher or equivalent international English certificates (specified in Appendix 1 of Guidance No. 1365/VNU-DT) or other international foreign language certificates (specified in Appendix 2 of Guidance No. 1365/VNU-DT) and meeting one of the following conditions:
- Having an average GPA of 8.0 or higher in the remaining two subjects of the admission combination (including either Mathematics or Literature) in high school, with no subject below 7.0 in any semester, and passing the interview with the Admissions Council;
- The total score of the remaining two subjects in the admission combination must be at least 14 points in the 2022 high school graduation exam (including either Mathematics or Literature; for health-related fields: Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, the score of the remaining two subjects in the admission combination must be at least 16 points).
For certain medical, pharmaceutical, and other highly competitive training programs, priority is given to candidates with an IELTS English certificate of 6.5 or higher combined with specialized subjects (the average academic score of the remaining two subjects in the admission combination (including either Mathematics or Literature) in high school must be 8.5 or higher, and no subject score below 8.0 in any semester).
International certificates must be valid on the date of application (valid for 2 years from the date of the exam).
Candidates must submit their application for admission through direct admission, priority admission, and other admission methods (Assessment of Competency, SAT, ACT, A-level, IELTS combined with high school academic scores or high school graduation exam scores, etc.) before July 15, 2022, according to the guidelines of the Schools/Faculties under VNU Hanoi.
The point I want to emphasize is that admission to high-quality training programs mostly uses an admission combination that includes a foreign language. For the few combinations that do not include a foreign language, the foreign language will be a prerequisite (candidates must achieve a minimum foreign language score of 6.0 or a minimum of 7.0 in each semester of the foreign language subject at the high school level, or equivalent international foreign language certificates listed in the regulations of VNU) to ensure the necessary foreign language proficiency for candidates to study these programs and meet the requirements of international-level jobs after graduation.
Besides successfully carrying out domestic student recruitment, VNU Hanoi continues to promote international student exchange programs, attracting foreign students to study English-taught programs at its member schools/faculties.

- Professor, could you please provide more details about the new training programs that VNU will be recruiting for this year?
As a leading center for university education, scientific research, and knowledge transfer across multiple disciplines and fields, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) constantly surveys the workforce needs of the labor market to develop training programs that meet the stringent requirements of the Industry 4.0 labor market. This year, we have developed eight new training programs to ensure a high-quality workforce, namely: [list of programs].Artificial intelligenceof the University of Technology; majorSmart and Sustainable Agricultural Engineers,Civil Engineeringof Vietnam-Japan University; majorEntertainment and Event Management,Smart and sustainable urban governanceof the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Sciences; in particular, the International School offers 3 combined bachelor's and master's degree programs: majorsApplied Information Technology,Industrial Systems and Logistics Engineering,Financial Technology and Digital Business.

Vietnam National University, Hanoi participates in the Admissions Counseling Day organized by Tuoi Tre newspaper.
- This is the first time Vietnam National University, Hanoi has launched a combined bachelor's and master's degree program. Professor, could you elaborate on the advantages of these programs?
The combined bachelor's and master's degree program is a new training model, implemented for the first time at Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU). Under this model, students have the opportunity to enroll directly in a master's program and accumulate master's credits starting from their final year of undergraduate studies. The first advantage of this model is that it shortens the training time for students. Specifically, the undergraduate program takes 4 years, and the combined program takes 5 years, instead of 6 years as in the current separate training model.
Secondly, students in these training programs study modules in English right from the group and major knowledge blocks. By the end of the second year, students must achieve a B2 level in English, equivalent to level 4 in the 6-level framework of Vietnamese proficiency. In addition, the modules involve the participation of businesses from program development to training organization, so students gain valuable practical experience and are well-prepared for the job market.
- Regarding the admission method using the competency assessment test, what is the enrollment quota for this method, Professor?
The reform of the admissions process using competency assessment at Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) is a groundbreaking and necessary solution, demonstrating VNU's pioneering role in implementing Resolution 29 on fundamental and comprehensive reform of education and training. The results of the competency assessment exam achieve the objectives regarding quality, process, results, similarity, and balance of difficulty levels according to modern measurement and testing science.
In 2022, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) plans to organize 16 rounds of the National Competency Assessment Exam for high school students, from February to August, for approximately 70,000 candidates. Member schools/faculties under VNU and/or universities nationwide may use the exam results for university admissions in 2022. To date, more than 60 universities nationwide have registered to use the National Competency Assessment Exam results as a basis for admissions.
The National Competency Assessment Exam (ĐGNL) consists of 150 questions divided into three sections: Quantitative Reasoning (50 questions in 75 minutes), Qualitative Reasoning (50 questions in 60 minutes), and Science (50 questions covering natural sciences, technology, and social sciences, in 60 minutes). Candidates take the exam on a computer, with multiple-choice questions (selecting one of four answers) and filling in the answers. The total exam time is 195 minutes, with a total score of 150. For this method, candidates with a score of 80 or higher on the ĐGNL exam are eligible to apply for admission.
The exam will be highly selective, assessing students' abilities across three competency groups based on the output standards of the general education program; aiming for a positive correlation with the high school graduation exam results but with a higher level of difficulty and differentiation. It is ready to be used for university admissions and helps universities select the right and sufficient number of high-quality candidates for highly competitive majors with high entrance scores (e.g., health sciences, IT, foreign languages, economics, Oriental studies, Korean studies, etc.).
In 2022, Vietnam National University, Hanoi allocated at least 20% of its total enrollment quota to the admission method based on the results of the competency assessment test. For talent-based, high-quality programs, and "hot" majors with high admission scores above 26 points, 25-30% of the enrollment quota was allocated to the competency assessment method.
- What about other admission methods, Professor?
In 2022, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) continued to maintain the same admission method as in 2021, based on adjustments to some regulations and policies on direct admission to align with the general admission policy of the Ministry of Education and Training and to ensure the recruitment of high-quality students to study at VNU.
Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) offers direct admission, priority admission, and admission based on high school graduation exam results according to the general regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training. Direct admission is granted to candidates with results in standardized tests such as SAT, ACT, and A-Level, and candidates with international foreign language certificates (IELTS or equivalent) meeting the minimum quality assurance threshold.
For candidates who have graduated from high school and possess an international English certificate (IELTS, TOEFL) or other international foreign language certificates (listed in the VNU Hanoi list), combined with the scores of two subjects in the admission test combination for the major/program (including either Mathematics or Literature). Foreign nationals or Vietnamese students who studied high school abroad will be considered for admission according to VNU Hanoi's specific regulations for foreign students, and international students returning to Vietnam due to the pandemic.
In addition, VNU Hanoi expands the scope of direct admission and prioritizes admission for candidates who have won prizes in the VNU Hanoi Olympic competition, candidates who have won prizes in provincial/city-level excellent student competitions, and candidates from specialized high schools nationwide with excellent academic results and high school graduation exam results meeting the quality assurance threshold for the major/group of majors/training program.
Professor, what will the admission confirmation process be like at Vietnam National University this year?
This year, Vietnam National University, Hanoi continues to organize online enrollment confirmation for candidates. This provides optimal support for candidates, helping to reduce travel and avoid the loss of candidate documents when sent via post.
Detailed information regarding the 2022 regular undergraduate admissions of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) is published on the VNU website and the websites of its member/affiliated training units.
- This year, the Ministry of Education and Training has introduced several new guidelines for university admissions. Professor, could you point out some important aspects for candidates to consider?
Please note that from July 22, 2022 to 5:00 PM on August 20, 2022, candidates can register, adjust, and supplement their admission preferences an unlimited number of times. Registration of admission preferences for all admission methods must be done online through the System or the National Public Service Portal. Candidates use their assigned accounts to process information (enter, edit, view) on the System. The preferences registered by candidates for all majors and admission methods at all universities are ranked from 1 to the last (preference 1 being the highest priority); all candidate preferences for all university admission methods are processed on the System, and each candidate will only be admitted to the highest priority preference among those registered and eligible.

Professor, what are some of the differences in training and learning environment at Vietnam National University, Hanoi?

First of all, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has the longest tradition in the country, with its predecessor being the University of Indochina. Today, VNU has a history of over 100 years with many outstanding alumni who have contributed and continue to contribute to the building and protection of the nation. In particular, many of them also hold key and important positions in state agencies, governments, and leading economic enterprises and corporations nationwide.
Another distinctive feature of VNU's training is its dual degree program. VNU is the institution offering the most dual degree programs to students in Vietnam. All VNU students have the opportunity to pursue a dual degree at various faculties and schools such as: the University of Foreign Languages, the University of Education, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the International School, the Faculty of Law, etc. Within the same study period, students can receive two university degrees upon graduation, giving them a significant advantage in applying for jobs after graduation. However, students should note that pursuing a dual degree is both an opportunity and a challenge. It requires high concentration, genuine effort, and diligence. This will help students develop sharp thinking skills, effective time management and organization, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure. This forms the foundation for students to hone their skills and improve themselves before graduating from university.
In the 2022-2023 academic year, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) began piloting a scholarship program for students in basic science majors at the University of Science and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The scholarship package includes: tuition fee waiver, free on-campus accommodation, priority participation in scientific research and scientist incubation programs, priority consideration for other scholarships, and a living allowance of 20 million VND per academic year.
Thus, in addition to scholarship policies encouraging scholarships from the state budget and non-budgetary scholarships funded by organizations and individuals both domestically and internationally, students in basic science majors at Vietnam National University, Hanoi have more opportunities to realize their dreams in their favorite field of study with this dedicated scholarship program. This will be a motivation for students in basic science majors to improve their skills, become excellent students and scientists, and create a source of human resources for higher education as well as future scientific human resources.
Thank you very much, Professor!
