Wednesday - 10/07/2024 05:48
On July 2 and 3, 2024, the Center for Vietnamese Language and Culture organized a training course on Teaching Methods of Vietnamese as a Foreign Language for lecturers at the School. The lecturer of the training course was MSc. Nguyen Phuong Chung - Head of the Vietnamese Language Program, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, Columbia University (USA).
Ms. Nguyen Phuong Chung used to be an English lecturer, but one sentence changed the direction of her career: “Why not sell what you already have?” Since then, she has begun her journey to bring Vietnamese to thousands of students around the world.
With nearly 20 years of experience teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language, including 6 years working at Columbia University, MSc. Chung has gained valuable experience and researched new and optimal teaching methods.
In addition to traditional methods, effective but less used methods were also introduced, such as: learner-centered, discussion, interactive and content-focused. In particular, lecturers also had the opportunity to try out new ways of preparing lectures and creating curriculum frameworks, learning from leading professors in the field of teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language. MSc. Nguyen Phuong Chung is also working with colleagues to prepare a new book, focusing on students, focusing 100% on what students need in real life. The lectures are done according to the backward design model. This is a lecture preparation technique that has been applied in many places around the world, but is still quite new in Vietnam. The book is expected to be released next September.
