10. Summary of the thesis results:
After examining the narratives, characters, and motifs, we have come to the following conclusions:
1. The prominent character types in Irish folklore are: gods, fairies, and heroes. Of these, gods and heroes appear primarily in sagas, while fairies are frequently featured in fairy tales.
2. The basic motifs examined:
• Basic motifs for fairy characters: Motifs related to appearance – Motifs related to personality traits – Motifs related to magical powers.
• Basic motifs for male heroic characters: The motif of a miraculous birth – The motif of extraordinary feats – The motif of traveling to and returning from another world – The motif of the hero's death and immortality.
• Basic motifs for female protagonists: The motif of isolated nurturing – The motif of disobedience – The motif of tragic love.
3. From surveying and analyzing motifs, we draw conclusions about five heroic archetypes in Irish folklore:
• Heroes possess both physical strength and courage. (Representative: Cu Chulainn)
• Heroes possess both intellectual property and the responsibility to protect their community. (Representative: Finn Mac Cool)
• A hero embodying the spirit of adventure and the mission of passing on the legacy to future generations. (Representative: Oisin)
• A rebellious hero, unwilling to compromise, ready to die for love. (Representative: Deirdre)
• A hero who defies convention, accepting compromise to protect the legacy they have built. (Representative: Grainne)
4. We also provide an initial understanding of the belief systems and codes of conduct expressed through characters in Irish folklore. Accordingly, the original Irish believed in fairies and the existence of another world. They also believed in prophecy and in the existence of animals that represented each person's soul. The Irish behaved based on a foundation of hospitality and their obedience to the geis.
It can be said that the topic "Characters in Irish Folklore: A Typological Approach" is the first step on our journey of researching and exploring major world cultures, specifically Celtic culture. Expanding and deepening our cultural research will lead to more useful and comprehensive conclusions.
