10. Summary of thesis results:
After examining the stories, characters and motifs, we came to the following conclusions:
1. The prominent character types in Irish folklore are: gods, fairies, and heroes. Gods and heroes appear mainly in sagas, while fairies are often told in fairy tales.
2. Basic motifs examined:
• Basic motifs of fairy characters: Motif of appearance – Motif of personality traits – Motif of magical power.
• Basic motifs of male heroes: Motif of strange birth - Motif of extraordinary feat - Motif of traveling to another world and returning - Motif of death and immortality of the hero.
• Basic motifs of female heroes: Motif of nurturing isolation – Motif group of disobedience – Motif group of tragic love.
3. From the survey and analysis of motifs, we draw conclusions about five heroic models in Irish folk tales:
• A hero with physical strength and courage. (Representative: Cu Chulainn)
• A hero with intellectual property and the responsibility to protect the community. (Representative: Finn Mac Cool)
• A hero with an adventurous spirit and a mission to pass on the generation. (Representative: Oisin)
• The hero is disobedient, does not accept compromise, and is willing to die for love. (Representative: Deirdre)
• The hero disobeys and accepts compromise to protect the legacy he has built. (Representative: Grainne)
4. We also provide an initial understanding of the belief system and code of conduct expressed by the characters in Irish folklore. Accordingly, the primitive Irish believed in fairies and the existence of other worlds. They also believed in prophecies and believed in the existence of animals that represented the soul of each person. The Irish based their behavior on the foundation of hospitality and their obedience to the geis.
It can be said that the topic Characters in Irish Folktales: A Typological Approach is the first step on the journey of researching and exploring the great cultures of the world, specifically our Celtic culture. Expanding and deepening the study of culture will bring more useful and comprehensive conclusions.
