This thesis aims to clarify the overarching symbolism of the game throughout Nabokov's "The Defense of Luzhin," revealing its many hidden meanings. The thesis employs a poetics-based approach combined with intertextual and semiotic methods, employing analytical and synthetic techniques. From this, we present research, evaluation, and evidence demonstrating the overarching symbolism of the game by clarifying its manifestation in the structure, characters, and imagery of the work. Through analysis of the work's structure and the integration of game theory research, we conclude that the game is almost an overarching symbol, expressing the content and meaning that the author Nabokov intended to convey.

Abstract: Game as a symbol in Nabakov's novel The Luzhin Defense.
The thesis aims to clarify the game symbolism that covers the whole of Nabokov's “Luzhin Defense” with many hidden meanings. The thesis with the main approach which is poetics, which combines intertextual and semiotic approaches, analytical and synthesis operations. We thus provide research, evaluation, and proof that the game is an extensive symbol by clarifying the game expressed in the structure, characters and image of the work. From the analysis of the work's structure and the combination of research through game theory, we come to the affirmation that the game is almost an extensive symbol, expressing the contents and meanings that Nabokov wanted to express.
