10. Summary of the thesis results:
With the thesis topic being the filmmaking style of director Sergei Eisenstein, the research results, presented in the entire three-chapter structure of the thesis, demonstrate the following points:
Firstly, the thesis emphasized the role of editing in the art of cinema. From silent films to films with sound, the arrangement of scenes and the assembling of images in a film are directed by the director and the montage work in the editing room. The characteristic of cinematic art is its synthesis, in which, to achieve effectiveness, the assistance of editing as a means of expression is crucial, and it also contributes to the formation of the cinematic language. In the field of editing, several directors worldwide have dedicated themselves to researching the art and techniques of editing, bringing about significant results for the art of cinema. Among them, the master director Sergei Eisenstein (S. Eisenstein) researched, used, and created distinctive editing methods, resulting in a unique editing style.
Secondly, Soviet cinema of the 1920s was a pioneering center of filmmaking – with renowned directors such as Sergei Eisenstein, Dziga Vertov, Lev Kuleshov, Vsevolod Pudovkin, and Alexander Dovjenko… they were leading international filmmakers. They invented Soviet montage. In particular, director S. Eisenstein's unique and distinctive editing technique – intellectual montage – stood out. S. Eisenstein also frequently used extended metaphors. Furthermore, he skillfully employed cross-cutting and dynamic cutting techniques. Based on these characteristic editing methods, he not only laid the foundation for the soul and appearance of his later films but also showcased his filmmaking style.
Thirdly, Vietnamese feature films have absorbed the experiences of the "Soviet montage" and the values from director S. Eisenstein's film editing methods to achieve creative goals in their works. Today, the continued creative application of S. Eisenstein's film editing methods, combined with modern equipment, is an important basis for creating high-quality films with artistic value and meaning in the visual language of cinema.
11. Practical applications: The research results of this project serve as a basis for filmmakers, directors, and especially film editors in Vietnam to refer to and apply in the creative process of cinematic works. Firstly, the thesis lays stress on the roles of editing in cinematography. In the process of shifting from silent films to sound films, the outset of scenes and the arrangement of images in cinematic works are managed by directors and the montage in the editing room. The feature of cinematographic art is its synthesis, whereby montage art acts as one of the means of expression, and also as a factor in constituting language to achieve efficiency. In the field of editing, there are a variety of directors around the world who have dedicated themselves to the study of the art and editing of editing and have brought great achievements to the art of cinema. Typically, master director Sergei Eisenstein has researched, used and created outstanding editing methods which results in a unique editing style.
Secondly, Soviet cinema of the 1920s was the center of avant-garde film - with famous directors such as Sergei Eisenstein, Dziga Vertov, Lev Kuleshov, Vsevolod Pudovkin and Alexander Dovjenko who were the leading international filmmakers. They invented the Soviet Montage, whereby director S. Eisenstein employed the unique editing technique - Intellectual montage and he also usually used the extended metaphor. In addition, he successfully adopted the methods of parallel editing (Cross - Cutting), Contrast editing (dynamic cutting). Those exceptional editing methods are prerequisites that not only lay the foundation for creating the soul and appearance of later cinematic works, but also express his filmmaking style.
Last but not least, Vietnamese movies absorb the experiences of "Soviet montage" and values from the director S. Eisenstein's editing method with the aim of stimulating creativity in the cinematic works. Today, the creative application of S. Eisenstein's editing methods in combination with modern equipment is a fundamental basis for producing adequate cinematic works with artistic value and the meaning of cinematic visual language.
