This was the theme of the international scientific conference organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, with the support and collaboration of the French Institute for Development Research (IRD) and the Vingroup Innovation Foundation (VinIF), taking place on December 3, 2024.
The conference attracted the participation of many prestigious scholars from both domestic and international backgrounds (such as France, China, Russia, Germany, Australia, Canada, etc.), researchers from numerous universities and research institutes in Vietnam, representatives from several scientific and management agencies in the fields of tourism and culture, and a large number of students and trainees attending in person at the auditorium and online via Zoom. The Conference Organizing Committee received nearly 30 full papers from Vietnamese and international scientists, focusing on several topics: Theoretical frameworks and interdisciplinary research methods on heritage and tourism; Discourse and negotiation within communities for tourism development; State and community institutions for cultural transmission; Living heritage and the dynamics of tourism development from urban areas to ethnic minority communities; Religious heritage, traditional creativity in heritage promotion and sustainable tourism. In his opening remarks at the workshop, Professor Lai Quoc Khanh (Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities) emphasized: Article 88 of the amended Law on Cultural Heritage, which was passed by the National Assembly 10 days ago (November 23rd, coinciding with Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day), clearly states that the "use and exploitation of cultural heritage must ensure the following requirements: promoting the fine traditions of the ethnic groups living together in Vietnam; contributing to the creation of new cultural values and expanding international cultural exchange; contributing to sustainable development; and complying with the provisions of the law on intellectual property." Thus, the opportunities and challenges posed by the conservation and promotion of heritage in relation to tourism development in particular and sustainable development in general in Vietnam are practical issues that require consultation with Vietnamese and international scientists from multi-dimensional perspectives and multi-disciplinary approaches to address academic issues that form the foundation for policy planning and implementation, such as the relationship between stakeholders (state management, tourism and heritage communities), heritage economics and tourism, legal aspects, and communication. In this context, the international scientific conference "Heritage and Tourism from an Anthropological and Interdisciplinary Approach" will not only be an opportunity for researchers to share knowledge, but also contribute to promoting cooperation among stakeholders to preserve and enhance heritage values in sustainable tourism development.
Professor Lai Quoc Khanh delivered the opening remarks at the international scientific conference: “Heritage and Tourism from an Anthropological and Interdisciplinary Approach.”
Through specific case studies and analyses of the vibrant and diverse practical processes of transforming culture into heritage and cultural heritage into tourism products, the reports utilize key concepts such as discourse and negotiation, commodification, traditional creation, experience, living heritage, etc. These concepts not only shed light on current events but also demonstrate the diversity in anthropological and social science interpretations of cultural heritage and tourism development, based on new data obtained from field studies, including standardized and long-term ethnic field studies. Under this approach, scholars argue that heritage is not only linked to traditional cultural and historical values but also encompasses everyday, contemporary elements. Tourism, in relation to heritage, also needs to be viewed from economic, cultural, and social perspectives.

Based on research into the multifaceted relationships between heritage conservation, tourism development, and local communities, scientists have proposed several solutions to address pressing issues in the relationship between heritage and tourism, aiming to preserve and promote the value of heritage in the context of globalization and sustainable development. The reports emphasize an anthropological and interdisciplinary approach: combining anthropology, history, economics, tourism management, and related fields to achieve sustainable development and preserve heritage values in the face of challenges such as commercialization, climate change, and conflicts of interest.
Professor. David Anderson - University of British Columbia, Canada
Dr. Tran Huu Son - Institute for Applied Cultural and Tourism Research
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Hong Hai - University of Social Sciences and Humanities
Dr. Nguyen Vu Hoang - University of Social Sciences and Humanities Concluding the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Suu emphasized: “The workshop took place in 4 subcommittees, with 14 papers presented directly and more than 30 comments and very open exchanges on research results revolving around the workshop's theme. The success of the workshop lies not only in sharing new research results from Vietnamese anthropologists and international scientists, but also in raising many interesting issues that need to be further researched in a more thorough and in-depth manner.” With an anthropological and interdisciplinary approach, many reports have proposed scientifically sound policy advice with practical significance for the preservation and promotion of heritage; addressing the relationship between heritage preservation and socio-economic development, especially tourism, in the context of globalization and strong digital transformation. On behalf of the organizing unit, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Suu once again thanked the scientists for their participation and the support of the VinGroup Innovation Fund and the French Institute for Development Studies for contributing to the success of the conference. Following the conference, high-quality reports will be selected, further refined and improved for publication in specialized journals or as a monograph, serving as a useful reference for researchers in ethnology, anthropology, and social sciences. Some photos from the International Scientific Conference held at VNU-USSH.
