Teaching and research in American Studies and Asian Studies: prominent issues and major trends.

This issue was discussed at the international scientific conference held at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi this morning, April 11, 2025.
 

The event was organized to commemorate the 30th anniversary (1995-2025) of the normalization of relations between Vietnam and the United States and the implementation of activities of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the start of the American Studies & American Studies curriculum at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
The workshop attracted the participation of scientists and lecturers from domestic and international universities such as the US Embassy in Vietnam; the Asia Foundation; the National Library of Vietnam; the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi; Utah State University - USA; the Institute of American Studies; the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam; the University of Foreign Languages, VNU Hanoi...
This is a forum for scientific exchange, fostering interaction among scholars both domestically and internationally, aiming to build a network for teaching and research in American Studies and the Studies of the Americas.

Welcoming the efforts of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi in organizing the conference, Ms. Mary Beth Polley - Cultural and Press Attaché of the US Embassy emphasized that the conference, with the participation of reputable scientists in Vietnam and universities around the world, will contribute to strengthening the comprehensive strategic relationship between Vietnam and the United States.
According to Mary Beth Polley, an increasing number of universities in Vietnam are developing majors or research programs on the Americas and the United States, opening up opportunities for collaborative research and teaching, including the training and research activities of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
Over the past decades, US organizations, universities, and research institutes have provided strong support for American studies research in Vietnam, particularly at VNU-USSH. Several faculty members and students from the university have received scholarships to participate in training programs in the United States. Representatives from the US Embassy in Vietnam stated that US cooperation and support activities will continue to be implemented to assist faculty and students of the university.
Dr. Le The Que - Former Head of the Department of International Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, recalled the strong cooperation between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and organizations and universities around the world in training in American Studies over the years.
At the conference, scientists from domestic and international universities summarized the results of teaching and research on American Studies and American Studies over the past 20 years in Vietnam and proposed new content, approaches, and teaching methods; they also exchanged views on research aimed at strengthening relations between Vietnam and the United States and other American countries in the future. The opinions expressed at this conference will contribute to policy advice for Vietnam's international integration process and promote increasingly close relations between Vietnam and the United States in particular, and American countries in general.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thien Thanh - Head of the Department of International Studies, chaired the first session of the conference.

Associate Professor Bui Thanh Nam - Vice Chairman of the University Council - chaired the second session of the workshop.
In 2003, with the support of the US Embassy and the Asia Foundation, the Faculty of International Studies developed a teaching and research program on American Studies and American Studies at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The Department of American Studies, within the Faculty of International Studies, was established in 2004 to manage and further develop the program.
Over the past 20 years, the program has achieved significant results, contributing to the development of training and in-depth research in American Studies and American Studies at several universities and research institutes such as the University of Social Sciences and Humanities of Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Hue University, Da Nang University, Hanoi University, and several other universities nationwide.
