QS World University Rankings 2022: Vietnam National University, Hanoi ranks among the top 1000 in the world for the fourth consecutive year.

The QS (Quacquarelli Symonds - UK) ranking organization announced the 2022 World University Rankings (QS WUR 2022) this morning, June 9, 2021. Two higher education institutions have been included in this ranking for four consecutive years: Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-Hanoi) and Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM). This year, two new institutions have joined the ranking for the first time: Ton Duc Thang University and Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

In this ranking period, the QS WUR 2022 ranked 1,300 universities out of a total of 1,673 educational institutions in 93 countries and territories. Of these, 145 universities participated in the ranking for the first time. The data used for the ranking was derived from 2 million nominations from academics and 450,000 nominations from employers, collected 130,000 responses from academics and 75,000 employers globally, and analyzed 96 million citations (2015-2020) from 14.7 million articles (2015-2019).

According to the ranking results, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has been ranked in the 801-1000 group of the best universities globally for the fourth consecutive year. Although consistently maintaining this ranking group, VNU's ranking score has steadily increased, leading to a gradual improvement in its overall ranking. Specifically, in the three previous rankings, VNU was in the top 78.5% (2019), 74.9% (2020), and 67.5% (2021) of universities. In this latest ranking, VNU has risen to the top 61.6% of universities worldwide.

Trends in Vietnam National University's ranking in the QS World Rankings

Regarding the ranking criteria, this year the academic reputation criterion of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) saw a significant increase in points, becoming the highest-scoring criterion for VNU (16.6 points, up 6.4% compared to QS WUR 2021) and ranking 499th in the world (up 25 places compared to QS WUR 2021). In addition, VNU's employer reputation criterion also increased compared to the previous ranking (up 8%). This demonstrates the growing scientific prestige and international standing of VNU, recognized by many partners.

In the QS WUR 2022 rankings, in addition to the two national universities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam also had two new educational institutions included in the ranking: Ton Duc Thang University (ranked in the 1001-1200 group) and Hanoi University of Science and Technology (in the 1201+ group).

The QS WUR ranking system ranks universities based on six criteria, including: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation, citations per faculty member, faculty-to-student ratio, international faculty ratio, and international student ratio. QS's ranking criteria emphasize the contribution and impact of a university's teaching and research quality on society (through evaluations from businesses, domestic and international academics) and contributions to scientific research (through citations per faculty member).

In Southeast Asia, Singapore has 3 ranked higher education institutions, including 2 universities in the Top 15 globally (National University of Singapore (NUS) ranked 11th and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) ranked 12th), and 1 Singapore Management University in the 511-520 group. Malaysia has 22 ranked higher education institutions (an increase of 2 compared to QS WUR 2021), with the University of Malaya (UM) ranking 65th globally and 8 (out of 22) of its higher education institutions in the top 500 globally. Following Malaysia is Thailand with 10 ranked higher education institutions (an increase of 2 compared to QS WUR 2021), with Chulalongkorn University ranking 215th. The Philippines has 4 ranked higher education institutions, with the University of the Philippines ranking the best at 399; Indonesia has 16 ranked higher education institutions (an increase of 8 compared to QS WUR 2021), with the University of Indonesia ranking the best at 254.

In the world's top 10, British and American educational institutions remain familiar names in the world university rankings. The US continues to be home to leading universities, with 5 institutions in the Top 10, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) maintaining its number 1 position for 10 consecutive years, followed by Stanford University (3rd), Harvard University (5th), California Institute of Technology (Caltech – 6th), and the University of Chicago (10th). Next is the UK with 4 institutions (out of 90) in the world's top 10, including Oxford University (ranked 2nd, compared to 5th in the QS WUR 2021), Cambridge University (3rd), Imperial College London (7th), and University College London (UCL) in 8th.

Recently, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) continued to be included in the 2021 Asian University Rankings published by Times Higher Education (THE Asia) on June 2nd, 2021, ranking in the 251-300 group, leading Vietnam in overall ranking and achieving the highest scores in 4 out of 5 ranking criteria (Teaching, Research, Citations, and International Outlook). On April 21st, 2021, THE announced the results of the THE Impact Rankings 2021 (a ranking assessing the impact of universities worldwide on the community based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals), with VNU ranked 401-600 globally and being one of the top two educational institutions in Vietnam. In particular, regarding Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, this is the highest-ranked goal, and Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has reached the top 100 globally in this area, ranking 92nd out of 966 participating educational institutions.

Previously, in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) was ranked in the 801-1000 group globally. In addition, VNU also achieved a position of 101–150 for the first time in the QS Top 50 Under 50 ranking for the 2021 period. In terms of subject rankings, VNU currently has 5 fields ranked by QS: Computer Science and Information Systems (ranked 601–650 globally), Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace and Manufacturing (451–500), Mathematics (401–450), Physics and Astronomy (501–550), and Business and Management Studies (501–550). In the THE rankings, three fields of study at Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) are ranked: Computer Science (501-600 worldwide), Physical Sciences (601-800), and Engineering & Technology (401-500).
