2020-2021 school year: Widely deploying autonomy mechanism and improving the quality of training activities

That is one of the main themes of the 2020-2021 school year clearly stated at the conference to summarize the training work of the 2019-2020 school year and deploy tasks for the 2020-2021 school year held on August 26, 2020 in Hanoi online via the internet.

VNU President Nguyen Kim Son, VNU Vice President Pham Bao Son and Head of Training Department Nguyen Dinh Duc co-chaired the conference.

Head of Training Department Nguyen Dinh Duc emphasized some outstanding results in areas of work such as enrollment; training program development; international joint training management organization; student exchange; credit recognition; accreditation and assessment of training program quality; textbooks and learning materials; training management at junior high school (THCS), high school (THPT), university and postgraduate (SĐH).

Training work in the 2019-2020 school year, with the theme "Continuing to promote comprehensive innovation in teaching activities, constantly improving training quality" in the direction of innovation and entrepreneurship, promoting the autonomy of teachers and the initiative of learners: under the close direction of the Party Committee, the Board of Directors, the active support of relevant functional Departments, along with the participation of training units, training work at VNU has achieved remarkable results in the past school year.

The theme of the new academic year 2020-2021 for the entire VNU is "Expanding the scale and improving the quality of doctoral and high-quality training at VNU" and "Widely implementing the autonomous mechanism of training activities in new conditions after the new decree and regulations of VNU are issued". Training work will closely follow the tasks set out by the 6th Congress of the Party Committee of VNU for the 2020-2025 term with the slogan of action "Innovation - National Responsibility - Sustainable Development" to implement synchronous solutions to innovate enrollment, strengthen the capacity of training management and organization according to the advanced university governance model, improve the quality of training from undergraduate to doctoral levels, increase the application of information technology in teaching, training, and enrollment of units at VNU and strengthen international integration, innovate professions and training organization methods to meet the requirements of the new situation, context and human resource quality requirements of the 4.0 industrial revolution.

At the conference, delegates shared the current training situation of the unit, outstanding results in the past school year as well as proposed implementing a project to innovate university teaching activities; develop high-quality training programs; effective online training methods and solutions to attract learners, enhance the autonomy of teachers and learners in the new context...

Principal of the University of Natural Sciences Vu Hoang Linh proposed solutions to overcome the enrollment scale, create a flexible mechanism for postgraduate students of the University and at the same time gave comments on the university enrollment plan for the 2021-2022 school year.

Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities Hoang Anh Tuan said: due to the prolonged epidemic, VNU continues to study online, in addition to the adjustment plan, it is necessary to focus on improving the quality of online learning. Integrating online and in-person to best support learners.

The Principal of the University of Education, Nguyen Quy Thanh, proposed that VNU should promote scientific research among students and in the direction of teachers participating with students and having budget investment for topics, thereby increasing the publication of scientific research by students. It is recommended that excellent graduates combined with 01 article published in a prestigious journal of that field should be considered for direct admission to master's studies.

Director of the Institute for Quality Assurance Nghiem Xuan Huy has proposed solutions in building tools to support teaching activities; continuously improving the capacity of the teaching staff, changing new methods and applying information technology.

Head of the International Faculty, Le Trung Thanh, said: VNU should coordinate the project for One VNU. VNU should organize many specialized conferences to attract international students; open training programs abroad; strengthen coordination with units in VNU to re-plan the training program to calculate the right direction for enough training funding.

Prof. Mai Trong Nhuan, Chairman of the Quality Assurance Council, emphasized: Expanding the scale of training as well as applying online teaching methods must ensure the quality of output. Strengthening the work of educational quality assessment, every year there must be specific quality assessment, evaluation and quality of accredited training programs. In the new school year, VNU strives to be a pioneer in the country with all university training programs accredited. In the immediate future, it is necessary to focus on accreditation of postgraduate training programs at VNU.

Director Nguyen Kim Son requested that in the 2020-2021 school year, VNU-Hanoi continue to synchronously and effectively implement the school year's theme in the direction of widely implementing the autonomy mechanism of training activities in the new conditions after the new decree and regulations for VNU were issued. Continue to innovate teaching activities, support teachers and learners. In the development of new training programs, special attention should be paid to program quality and accreditation, opening new training programs to adapt to the labor market, increasing postgraduate training, especially at the doctoral level.

Each unit needs to identify the task of teaching innovation with the focus of VNU being digital transformation activities. VNU will issue specific guidance documents on online training, units need to identify that this is not a seasonal activity to respond to the Covid-19 epidemic but online teaching is part of VNU's digital transformation activities. Strengthen digitalization, databases, complete 100% digitalization of library books and learning resources to support online learning.

Regarding 2021 enrollment, VNU will organize its own enrollment plan and will announce it in the near future.

Regarding enrollment: in the 2019-2020 school year, VNU enrolls 10,420 students in 133 undergraduate majors/programs, including 15 new majors. As of August 26, 2020, there were 128,312 wishes (NV), of which NV1: 25,984 (an increase of 6.3% compared to 2019).

Postgraduate admissions are conducted online, with unified admission management throughout VNU, including international student admissions.

Opening new training programs: In the 2019-2020 school year, VNU has assessed and issued many training programs at all 3 training levels (Bachelor, Master, PhD). There are 18 university-level training programs (12 standard training programs, 04 training programs meeting Circular No. 23/2014/TT-BGDDT, 02 high-level training programs according to unit characteristics), 02 application-oriented master's level training programs, 01 doctoral level training program issued and assigned training tasks in the past year.

Student exchange activities have developed strongly, the excellent achievements of the specialized high school block continue to be maintained and developed with many national awards and international medals. This further affirms the training quality and brand of VNU. In the 2019-2020 school year, VNU has 37 student exchange programs, with 35 VNU students nominated for exchange and 17 international students nominated by international partners to study at training units in VNU. Unlike the previous school year, most of VNU students registered for exchange programs of international organizations AUN, UMAP, EU-SHARE and Erasmus+, in the 2019-2020 school year, most of the students were nominated to participate in exchange programs according to the MOU signed between VNU and foreign universities.
