On October 2nd, 2020, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held a meeting to summarize online training activities and develop a plan for online training in accordance with the regulations of Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Attending the meeting were Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan (Vice Rector of the University), along with representatives from the heads of functional departments, the Center for Training Quality Assurance, and representatives from the training units.

The purpose of the meeting was to review and evaluate the results of the online teaching and learning activities of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities over the past period, in order to identify strengths and weaknesses and draw lessons for the future. The meeting also discussed and contributed ideas on the implementation of Decision No. 2598/QD-VNU on the organization and management of online training at VNU.

At the meeting, delegates listened to Mr. Dao Minh Quan (Deputy Director of the Center for Information Technology Training and Application) present a summary of the school's online training implementation over the past period. Statistical data for the first semester of the 2020 academic year shows: 535 online courses were taught, 23,582 registrations were made, over 6,000 students participated in online learning, and 280 lecturers taught online. During the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, over 90% of the school's undergraduate and postgraduate courses were taught online through the UPM platform. The rapid and timely implementation of online teaching helped the school maintain its teaching and learning schedule during this challenging time.

MSc. Dao Minh Quan presented the report at the session.

MSc. Dao Minh Quan pointed out the advantages in implementing online teaching: timely guidance from the Ministry of Education and Training and Vietnam National University, Hanoi; the dedication, proactiveness, consensus, and support of staff and lecturers; a good online teaching platform; and decisive leadership from the university's leaders. However, there were also difficulties such as: the short and tight timeframe meant many lecturers did not have enough time to adapt; the IT system and software were not prepared for large-scale training; the digital learning materials system was limited; and students lacked adequate equipment and facilities.

To overcome these difficulties, the University will implement several solutions in the coming period: continue to strengthen the technological advancement of teaching and learning activities, consider the specific characteristics of the training field to build a suitable roadmap and proportion; focus on training and developing lecturers in online teaching methods; strengthen training and guidance on online learning methods for students; and build a team of dedicated staff to support lecturers and students. To implement the new regulations of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the University has set forth the following policies: restructure the curriculum to ensure that a maximum of 20% of the program's credits are delivered online; allocate teaching methods towards a blended learning approach (combining in-class and online teaching); and issue policies to support the development of electronic lectures and provide funding for lecturers and teaching assistants.

Dr. Cam Anh Tuan (Department of Archival Studies and Office Management) gave his contribution and opinion.

During the discussion, delegates unanimously agreed on the importance of online teaching, not only during the Covid-19 pandemic but also as a powerful supplement to traditional teaching. Online teaching can alleviate the burden on traditional classrooms; facilitate travel and time management for both lecturers and students; and foster creativity in teaching through online features. On the other hand, delegates also offered suggestions on several issues, such as: the limited online infrastructure and equipment of the university; the low level of interaction between lecturers and students; the lack of close coordination and guidance between faculty leaders and lecturers; and the insufficient attention paid to the mechanism for building evidence of online teaching.

Professor Hoang Anh Tuan delivered a speech at the meeting.

Concluding the meeting, Professor Hoang Anh Tuan (Vice Rector of the University) reaffirmed the inevitable trend of applying online teaching as part of the Digital Transformation roadmap for training activities set forth by Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The Vice Rector highly appreciated the contributions and opinions expressed and hoped that the lecturers would continue to promote the spirit of sharing and cooperation to effectively implement online teaching even in the post-Covid period. The University will soon proceed with developing documents and policies on online teaching based on the new regulations of Vietnam National University, Hanoi to facilitate the implementation by the lecturers.
