Subcommittee 1 with the topic "Vietnam - Japan relations in modern times"chaired by Prof. Dr. Momoki Shiro (Vietnam-Japan University); Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang (University of Social Sciences and Humanities); Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Van Quan (University of Social Sciences and Humanities) and Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim (Director of the Center for Sea and Islands, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU).
With a total of 9 papers presented directly at the workshop and online, subcommittee 1 focused on research on awareness, support for educational exchange and cooperation, and technology transfer in modern times. At the workshop, the discussion session and papers also presented positive views on the prospects for Vietnam-Japan cooperation in peacetime and expectations for the strengthening of the relationship between the two countries in the future.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Vietnam YAMADA Takio emphasized: “The current Vietnam-Japan relationship can be said to be the best ever. That relationship has a long historical tradition since the Middle Ages. And in 1973, the two countries officially signed a diplomatic document, establishing the relationship between the two countries, which has now been 50 years. This is a very important milestone, both countries have carried out many activities to celebrate this event. I highly appreciate the significance of today's International Scientific Conference, which was organized with close coordination between experts from Vietnam and Japan. The conference was organized as a testament to that good relationship, and at the same time contributed to opening a new period of development in the field of research on history, culture and educational activities between Vietnam and Japan."
Subcommittee 2: "Vietnam - Japan relations in the pre-modern period"
The presiding committee of subcommittee 2 was attended by Prof. Dr. Furuta Motoo (Rector of Vietnam-Japan University); Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim (Director of the Center for Sea and Islands, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU); Prof. Dr. Momoki Shiro (Vietnam-Japan University), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thi Thu Giang (Vietnam-Japan University) and many lecturers, scientists, researchers and students from many universities and research institutes across the country.
Subcommittee 2 Presidium
Panel 2 has a total of 6 presentations emphasizing the trade exchange between Vietnam and Japan in the pre-modern period as shown through relics and antiquities such as coins and pottery; cultural exchange through literary works and language.
Dr. Do Thi Thuy Lan (University of Social Sciences and Humanities) presented a paper on “Overview of ancient Japanese coins discovered in Vietnam: A historical perspective”
Dr. Do Thi Thuy Lan (University of Social Sciences and Humanities) in her presentation “Overview of ancient Japanese coins discovered in Vietnam: A historical perspective” shared: Japanese metal coins discovered in Vietnam are important data and issues for studying the diplomatic, economic and cultural relations between the two countries in the Pre- and Early Modern periods. Along with ceramics and other relics, coins are authentic evidence of exchanges between Vietnam and Japan in the past; as well as affirming the presence and marks of Japanese people abroad in history.
“The participation of Japanese archaeologists since 2006 in the study of ancient coins, and from 2015-2016 in the study of Ha Tinh trading ports, ceramics and ancient coins has brought about new scientific methods, which have greatly contributed to recent achievements. These collaborations, together with the “talking coins”, have been, are and will be manifestations, evidences and prospects for the 50-year diplomatic relationship between Vietnam and Japan. And certainly more than that, in terms of time, level, achievements and sentiment." - Dr. Do Thi Thuy Lan said.

Dr. Nishino Noriko with her paper “Vietnamese Tea Pottery - The Age and Historical Context of “An Nam Pottery” Brought to Japan” said: Pottery produced in Vietnamese pottery villages came to Japan and was used in the context of tea ceremony culture. To this day, Vietnamese pottery or commonly known as “An Nam Pottery” is still cherished and passed down through many generations in Japan.

Summarizing the scientific content of the entire conference, Prof. Dr. Momoki Shiro (Vietnam Japan University) affirmed: The presentations of the conference were extremely rich and diverse, of high academic value and expressed an objective view from the two countries of Vietnam and Japan. The reports are evidence of international exchanges, learning and innovation from the two countries. Thanks to the progress in the field of Archaeology in Vietnam, the people of the two countries and international friends will be able to admire the good relationship and cultural exchange between Vietnam and Japan through artifacts such as coins, ceramics and literary works.
According to Prof. Dr. Momoki Shiro, the seminar “Vietnam – Japan Relations: Past – Present – Future” will be the premise, orientation for research and exchange in many other fields between the two countries in the future such as: Economy, Regional Environment, Education, Cultural and Historical Value Preservation, etc. In the future, many seminars will be held, promoting the process of knowledge exchange, finding new research directions in scientific research.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Prof. Dr. Furuta Motoo (Rector of Vietnam-Japan University) emphasized: The international scientific conference "Vietnam-Japan Relations: Past - Present - Future" is a place to exchange and emphasize the success and achievements of the Vietnam-Japan exchange, from the ancient medieval to modern periods. Prof. Dr. Furuta Motoo, on behalf of the Organizing Committee of the Conference, expressed his thanks to the organizers and Vietnamese and Japanese scholars who contributed multi-dimensional and in-depth research, creating the success of the conference and promoting sharing and enhancing understanding between the two countries.
Prof. Dr. Furuta Motoo shared: “I started studying Vietnam in the early 1970s. As a living witness to the 50-year history of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan, looking back and understanding the relationship between the two countries plays an important role in the development of bilateral cooperation.
Therefore, today's workshop has contributed to the process of promoting mutual understanding between the people of the two countries, and is a contribution to the important milestone of the 50th anniversary of Vietnam - Japan relations. As the President of Vietnam - Japan University, I promise to train high-quality human resources, the future young generation will be the bridge to strengthen the equal partnership between our two countries.”.
The conference has a total of 15 reports presented with multi-dimensional perspectives from many scholars from Vietnam and Japan. It is a place for universities between Vietnam and Japan to exchange and is also an opportunity for Vietnamese and international students to exchange and learn.
