Representing the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi were Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Ngoc - Senior Lecturer and Project Leader; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Van Quan - Head of the Department of History; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Hong Son - Deputy Head of the Department of History; Prof. Dr. Truong Quang Hai; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh; Prof. Dr. Lam Thi My Dung; and journalist Nguyen Quoc Phong - former Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Thanh Nien newspaper.
In his opening remarks at the conference, Mr. Tran Minh Hoan, Director of the Department of Science and Technology, stated that the compilation of the Nam Dinh Gazetteer is a special science and technology task of Nam Dinh province. This project has received close guidance from the provincial People's Committee leadership and the cooperation of scientists from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
"With the participation of leading scientists in the fields of history, geography, and culture, we are confident that the task of compiling the Nam Dinh Gazetteer will be carried out seriously, expeditiously, and will yield a product rich in scientific and practical value," emphasized the Director of the Department of Science and Technology.
Mr. Tran Minh Hoan, Director of the Department of Science and Technology, emphasized that compiling the Nam Dinh Gazetteer is a special scientific and technological task for Nam Dinh province.
Sharing the honor of the university being trusted by the People's Committee of Nam Dinh province to be the leading unit in implementing the task of compiling the Nam Dinh Gazetteer, Professor Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, affirmed that the university had invited leading scientists in various fields to participate in the compilation, with the desire to bring about a high-value scientific product that contributes to the development of science and education, raising the intellectual level of the people, serving policy planning, socio-economic development, ensuring national defense and security, and contributing to the completion of the national-level science and technology task of building the National Gazetteer of Vietnam according to the Prime Minister's Decision No. 2079/QD-TTg dated December 22, 2017.
“In 2003, the 900-page Nam Dinh Gazetteer – a collaborative scientific project between the People's Committee of Nam Dinh province and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi – created a great sensation after its compilation. Now, 20 years later, the Nam Dinh Gazetteer will be re-compiled based on the standards of the National Gazetteer of Vietnam, ensuring that the information is recorded, described, and provided in a complete, objective, and truthful manner. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is determined to invest human and material resources, along with scientists and relevant agencies of Nam Dinh province, to complete the project in the best possible way as soon as possible.”
Professor Hoang Anh Tuan, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, affirmed that the Nam Dinh Gazetteer will be compiled by a team of leading scientists in various fields.
In his remarks outlining the task, Mr. Tran Le Doai, Vice Chairman of Nam Dinh province, affirmed that the Provincial People's Committee and relevant agencies will closely cooperate with scientists from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, determined to carry out the scientific and technological task which is of great significance to the development of the locality. The university needs to have a specific plan for implementing the task, and the Provincial People's Committee will provide personnel support to ensure the scientists can carry out the task as smoothly as possible.
Vice Chairman of Nam Dinh province, Tran Le Doai, affirmed that the Provincial People's Committee will closely cooperate with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to resolutely carry out scientific and technological tasks that are of great significance to the development of the locality.
In agreement with the policy and determination of the Nam Dinh Provincial People's Committee in implementing this important task, Professor Dr. Nguyen Quang Ngoc - the project leader - shared that the scientists of VNU-USSH will dedicate their efforts, intellect, and enthusiasm to completing the compilation of the Nam Dinh Gazetteer on schedule, before May 2025, with the highest scientific and practical value.
The University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, has extensive experience in compiling local gazettes. However, developing a gazette according to new criteria presents many new and challenging aspects. Therefore, VNU-USSH scientists spent over a year researching the content of the Nam Dinh province gazette, organizing scientific workshops, and forming research groups before signing the contract for this scientific task. Professor Nguyen Quang Ngoc also shared his desire to invite local experts to participate in compiling the gazette to contribute to the practical value of the project.

Professor Nguyen Quang Ngoc, the project leader, shared that the scientists of VNU-USSH will dedicate their efforts, intellect, and enthusiasm to completing the compilation of the Nam Dinh Gazetteer with the highest scientific and practical value.

Nam Dinh GazetteerThe aim is to provide basic knowledge about the natural geography, environment, people, history, politics, economics, society, and culture of the present-day Nam Dinh region in both overall and specific contexts.
The research findings of this project constitute a comprehensive and holistic knowledge base, providing fundamental understanding and documentation to state management levels, researchers, and society as a whole regarding current and historical issues in Nam Dinh province. This is a valuable reference document and an important database serving the comprehensive management and development of Nam Dinh province in particular and the Red River Delta region in general.
Furthermore, the local history book, compiled according to the national standards of Vietnamese local history, will be a valuable resource for research institutes, universities, colleges, and secondary schools in Nam Dinh province in implementing local education programs within the new general education curriculum.
