This morning, August 15, 2025, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, in collaboration with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, organized the International Scientific Conference "From the August Revolution to the New Era of Development: The Country's Foundation, Potential, Position and International Prestige".
In her opening speech, the Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Prof. Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan said that the International Scientific Conference From the August Revolution to the New Era of Development: The Country's Foundation, Potential, Position and International Prestige is not only a major scientific event, but also an opportunity for domestic and foreign scientists and scholars to look back on the 80-year history of both hardship and glory of the nation. From there, analyze the core values, summarize valuable lessons and contribute their voices to shape the vision and development orientation in the new period.
Permanent Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council, Prof. Dr. Ta Ngoc Tan affirmed that the theme of the Conference has great significance in the context of celebrating the 80th anniversary of National Day.
According to Professor Ngo Thi Phuong Lan, the August Revolution of 1945 was an epic of the will to rise up and the desire for freedom, giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, opening a new era: the era of independence, freedom and progress towards socialism.
Right after the glory of independence, our country had to face an unprecedented precarious situation. A situation that was likened to “a thousand pounds hanging by a thread”, surrounded by internal enemies and external enemies. More than 90% of the population was illiterate, a devastating famine took the lives of millions of people, the treasury was empty, and the newly established revolutionary government was still weak.
However, like a small boat in the midst of a storm, the Vietnamese people have steadily weathered the waves thanks to the Party's steadfast oars and the strength of national unity. We have maintained our independence, protected the fruits of the revolution and laid the foundation for national construction.
Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Prof. Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan delivered the opening speech at the Conference.
After 80 years of ups and downs, Vietnam has grown strongly to become a country with development potential, deep integration, and increasingly affirmed international position and prestige. Today's generation does not have to fight with guns like previous generations, but has the responsibility to continue that proud tradition of patriotism and solidarity on other "fronts": science, education, culture and economy.
Over the years, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, in collaboration with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, has accompanied research projects, training programs, seminars, and large-scale academic forums, contributing to the training of high-quality human resources for the country's development.
Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi spoke at the Conference
International scientific conference From August Revolution to the new era of development: The country's foundation, potential, position and international prestige are vivid evidence of the spirit of people's solidarity, close and lasting cooperation; the convergence of intelligence and aspirations to contribute of the two Universities of Social Sciences and Humanities at the two ends of the country.
The conference gathered nearly 200 scientists and scholars at home and abroad, with 150 elaborate reports, deployed through three sub-committees: August Revolution 1945 in Vietnamese history and international position; 80 years of national construction and development (1945 - 2025); Vietnam in the new era of development.
The workshop attracted the participation of many scientists and interested people.
With a rich variety of research fields, from history, politics, diplomacy to economics, culture, and society, along with the presence of many prestigious domestic and international scholars, it contributes to opening up sharp analyses, new discoveries, and recommendations of scientific and practical value.
In particular, the plenary session provided a panoramic view of Vietnam's position since the August Revolution until now. From here, it suggested core historical and contemporary issues, fundamental factors in Vietnam's current development.
Leaders of the two Universities of Social Sciences and Humanities presented scientific publications to scientists and former leaders.
Many opinions at the Conference not only affirmed the position of the event in national history but also clarified its international character, placing the August Revolution in the “world revolutionary storm” at that time. Core issues such as the diplomatic struggle of the Viet Minh Front, the art of seizing opportunities and lessons for the renovation process, and the international character of the 1946 Constitution were discussed, providing profound insights.
Scholars also analyzed foreign policies, typically the process of reconciliation and building partnerships with the United States, France, and Japan, as well as policies toward overseas Vietnamese to promote national strength. The core values of the 1945 Declaration of Independence were examined in relation to the aspirations for national development during the integration period, affirming the lasting value of the August Revolution for the historical process of the nation.
Presenting a paper at the Workshop, Prof. Dr. Pierre Asselin, San Diego State University, USA, pointed out a new perspective on the August Revolution of 1945 from studying the nature of the national liberation struggle in Vietnam right after World War II.
Many delegates' opinions focused on clarifying Vietnam's mark in the 80-year journey of national founding and analyzing Vietnam's unique development path compared to the East Asian region. From here, they discussed how Vietnam affirms its mettle, responsibly integrates into the international community, and at the same time inherits the legacy of the August Revolution to build international prestige in the new era. A notable direction is to promote the system of cultural heritage associated with the August Revolution to become a resource for developing the cultural industry, showing the connection between the past and the future.
