The competition, co-organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) with Fudan University (China) and international organizations, officially opened on June 30, 2025.
The YICMG 2025 Mekong-Lancang Youth Initiative on Governance and Development competition attracted participation from students of major universities in the region such as Fudan University, Qinghai University and Guangxi University of Finance and Economics (China); Royal University of Phnom Penh (Cambodia); National University of Laos; and Yangon University (Myanmar). Vietnamese representatives included students from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi and the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam.

Youth Initiative Competition on Governance and Regional DevelopmentMekong - LancangThis is an annual competition aimed at encouraging youth-initiated solutions to promote sustainable development. First held in 2016, the competition has alternated between China and four countries in the Mekong Subregion: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand. In 2025, the 9th competition (YICMG 2025) will be held at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. YICMG is organized with the aim of enhancing exchange and mutual learning among young people from different countries, encouraging innovative solutions to regional development challenges, and promoting people-to-people connections within the framework of cooperation.Mekong - Lancang. Over 2,500 faculty members, students, and government representatives from six countries participated, presenting more than 430 policy proposals, social entrepreneurship initiatives, and micro-enterprise initiatives. Many of these initiatives were reported by reputable news outlets such as People's Daily, Xinhua, China Daily, GimYong News, Laotian Times, and Asia News Network. As an influential youth cultural exchange brand within the framework of cooperation.Mekong - LancangOver the past eight years, YICMG has infused youthful energy into its "Golden" regional cooperation model.

YICMG's themes over the years have been diverse across many fields, such as: Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development; Tourism Development and other Green Industries; Green Production, Consumption and Social Development; Internet and Social Life; Public Health and Health Insurance; New Agriculture, Food Security & Safety; Green Development and Ecological Civilization. The 2025 competition focuses on the theme “Equity and Quality in Education.” Against a backdrop of persistent challenges – from limited access to basic education and regional inequalities to underdeveloped vocational education and lifelong learning systems – participants are invited to develop innovative projects aimed at expanding opportunities for equitable, quality education for all communities in the region.Mekong - Lancang. As a co-organizer and host institution for 2025, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities will coordinate the Final Round in Hanoi, provide academic and logistical support to participating teams, and play a pioneering role in promoting cultural exchange and collaborative problem-solving among youth from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, China, and Vietnam. The school's participation affirms its long-term commitment to regional cooperation and sustainable development, while positioning Hanoi as a hub for nurturing talent and ideas that will help shape the future of education in Southeast Asia.
