30th Anniversary of the Faculty of Oriental Studies (1995-2025): One journey, thousands of footprints

At the 30th Anniversary Ceremony of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (1995-2025) on November 22, 2025, President Hoang Anh Tuan expressed his hope that the Faculty will continue to promote the internationalization of training programs to create many opportunities for international exchange and internship so that "each Oriental Studies student will have at least one visit to the country in which they study".
The ceremony was honored to have the participation of Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Principal of the School; former leaders of the Faculty, former teachers, senior representatives from embassies of various countries and numerous delegates from agencies, enterprises, international organizations, domestic and foreign academic partners along with generations of lecturers, students, alumni and students of the Faculty of Oriental Studies.
 

Three decades of "creation - foundation - orientation"
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Pham Hoang Hung, Head of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, emphasized that the 30-year journey is a journey of creating and fostering sustainable academic values. From its predecessor, the Oriental Studies Department of Hanoi National University (1993), to the official milestone of its establishment in 1995, the Faculty has developed into a prestigious training environment with thousands of bachelors, masters and doctors in fields and specialties such as Oriental Studies, Southeast Asian Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies, Chinese Studies, Indian Studies, Thai Studies, Southeast Asian Studies and Asian Studies.
Many generations of leading intellectuals have made great contributions to laying the foundation and building the academic reputation of the Faculty, including the late Professor Phan Huy Le - the first Head of the Faculty, and respected professors and associate professors such as Professor Nguyen Van Hong, Professor Luong Ninh, Associate Professor Nguyen Quoc Hung, Associate Professor Do Thu Ha.
 
From one journey to thousands of footprints
Over the past 30 years, the Faculty of Oriental Studies has become a prestigious training address with the highest admission scores in the country. In particular, the Faculty has built a wide cooperation network with prestigious universities in India, Korea, Japan, Singapore, China, Thailand and maintained a clean, united, and unique academic environment. On the occasion of the meaningful 30-year milestone, the Faculty of Oriental Studies was honored to receive a Certificate of Merit from the Ministry of Education and Training and a Certificate of Quality Accreditation for the majors of Southeast Asian Studies and Japanese Studies.
Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the School expressed his hope that the Faculty will continue to promote the internationalization of training programs to create many opportunities for international exchange and internship so that "each Oriental Studies student will have at least one visit to the country where they are studying". In addition, it is necessary to increase international cooperation and publication projects to contribute to training a team of elite regional experts with cultural competence and deep integration capacity.
The speech of Prof. Dr. Mai Ngoc Chu - one of the founders of the Faculty expressed deep pride in the "Oriental Studies brand" and at the same time sent a message of maintaining identity, continuing to innovate to meet social needs and make practical contributions to the country.
 
 

Towards the future: “Confident integration – Courage to reach far”
The 30th anniversary of its establishment is not only an occasion of gratitude but also a milestone for the Faculty to determine a new vision in the context of Asia continuing to be the center of development in the 21st century. With a team of 34 lecturers and nearly 1,000 students today, the Faculty of Oriental Studies aims to continue to develop and maintain its position as one of the pioneers in regional studies training and international cooperation in Vietnam in the new era.
The ceremony ended in a solemn and warm atmosphere, opening a new chapter for the development journey of the Faculty of Oriental Studies - where Oriental knowledge, culture and spirit continue to spread strongly.
